Description
At MSPO 2014, International Defense Industry Exhibition in Poland, the Polish Defense Company HSW (Huta Stalowa Wola) has unveiled for the first time to the public its new 6x6 155mm self-propelled howitzer called Kryl based on a 6x6 truck chassis Jelcz. The first prototype of truck chassis for the Kryl artillery howitzer is currently undergoing test and field trials in Poland. In the framework of the modernization of its armed forces, Poland has showed interest for new wheeled self-propelled howitzer, as the Kryl. The design of the new artillery system will be based on the Krab 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzer and the WR-40 Langusta MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) to reduce production and operating costs. According some representatives of Jelcz Company, the first prototype of the Kryl will be ready for 2015 and could enter in service with the Polish Army in 2017. The Kryl prototype showed at MSPO features a gun and subframe of ATMOS 2000 gun system built in Israel by Elbit Systems. However, the serial production Kryl systems will be entirely manufactured in Poland.

Armament
The Kryl is fiited with the ATMOS 2000 gun system designed and manufactured by the Israeli Defense Company Elbit Systems. The ATMOS is armed with a 155 mm/52 calibre ordnance which conforms to NATO Joint Ballistic Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU). The Kryls has a maximum firing range of 40 km using Extended Range Full Bore Base Bleed (ERFB-BB) projectile. In firing position, one large hydraulically operated stabilisation spade is lowered at the rear of the vehicle. Maximum rate of fire is 6 rds/min and the vehicle can carry a total of 18 rounds. The weapon elevation and traverse is hydraulically operated. The weapon system can also be operated manually. For indirect usual firing elevation ranges from 0° to +70°º with traverse being 25° left and 50° right. The Kryl is able to be ready in fire position in less than 60 seconds, and be back into transport configuration in the same time.
Design and protection
The Kryl 155mm howitzer is mounted at the rear of 6x6 Jelcz 663.32 truck chassis. A fully enclosed cab has been mounted at the front of the vehicle and has seats for the crew of five. The cab is of welded steel armour and provides protection from small arms fire up to 7.62 mm in calibre and shell splinters (Level 1 STANAG 4569). The Kryl has a total weight of approximately 23,000 kg. The front of the crew cab is fitted with two large windows and one single door is available on each side.
Mobility
The Kryl is based on a modified Jelcz 6x6 truck chassis which provide high level of cross-country mobility. The engine has been moved forward, which allows for a lower vehicle – this means that KRYL will be transportable on a C-130 HERCULES aircraft. The Kryl is motorized with a 6-cylinder 320 hp MTU 6R106TD21 diesel engine. The Kryl can run at a maximum road speed of 80 km with a maximum cruising range of 500 km. The Kryl can climb a gradient of 36.4% and vertical obstacle of 0.6m. The vehicle can ford through water up to a depth of 0.7 m without preparation and 1.2m after preparation.
Accessories
The computerized Advanced Fire and Control System (AFCS) fitted on the Kryl include navigation and aiming systems and ballistic computation system. The AFCS displays the target information, selects the gun traverse and elevation and lays the weapon on the target. The AFCS includes ballistic computer, gun system computer, aimer's display, commander's display, inertial navigation, system Tallin 5000 and muzzle velocity radar MVRS 700 SCD. The main fire-control computer is located in the cab of the Kryl but at the rear on the right is the gun display unit for the crew when the system is deployed in the firing position.
