The Defence Research and Development (DRDO) has started work to produce hypersonic missiles that travel at five times the speed of sound, or a little over a mile every second. A wind tunnel to test and fine-tune the technology will be operational soon, a senior government said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to inaugurate the facility soon. Rheinmetall is pleased to confirm it has signed the Risk Mitigation Activity (RMA) contract with the Commonwealth of Australia for participation in the RMA, including the delivery of three Lynx KF41 Infantry Fighting Vehicles to compete in trials for the AUD 15 billion (EUR 9.5 billion) LAND 400 Phase 3 program. The RMA contract now signed has a value of AUD 50 million (about EUR 30 million).

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) has selected Kongsberg to design and manufacture an advanced, remote medium caliber turret. The solution includes Cortex ICS vetronics and combat services solutions for SAIC’S Advanced Reconnaissance Vehicle (ARV), formerly designated Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle), “at the edge” offering to the Office of Naval Research And the U.S. Marine Corps.

Airbus CyberSecurity and Thales, two European leaders in cybersecurity, have signed a partnership agreement to offer a unique solution against cyber attacks.  The solution will combine the file analysis system Orion Malware from Airbus CyberSecurity with Thales’s intrusion detection system Cybels Sensor, which obtained Security Visa from the French national cybersecurity agency (ANSSI) in April 2019.

Leonardo DRS, Inc. and RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. of Israel (RAFAEL)announced that the partners have delivered on time the first Trophy Active Protection Systems (APS) to defend the US Army’s M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks against a variety of anti-armor threats. This delivery marks the first of several that will ultimately outfit four brigades of tanks.

South Korean Company Hanwha Defense Systems has unveiled its new generation of tracked armored IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle ) at ADEX 2019, Seoul Aerospace defense Exhibition that was held in South Korea. It is a contender for the Land 400 Phase 3 program of the Australian army aiming to replace the old M113AS4 tracked armored personnel carriers.

Raytheon has been selected to provide the US Army with their next-generation, 360-degree capable radar - the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS). Raytheon will receive more than $384 million to deliver six production representative units of the advanced LTAMDS radar under an Other Transactional Authority U.S. Army agreement. LTAMDS is a new radar that will ultimately replace the current U.S. Army's Patriot radars. It will operate on the Army's Integrated Air and Missile Defense network.

The Russian Strategic Missile Troops (RVSN) will receive a Taifun-M simulator to train security personnel and reconnaissance troopers, the Russian Defense Ministry said. "The servicemen will learn to install intrusion detectors, which can detect conditional saboteurs in any meteorological conditions at any time of the day," it said.

Fresh from performing at The Queen’s Birthday Parade, the infantry soldiers of British 1st Battalion the Grenadier Guards deployed to the austere jungle of Belize to hone their elite skills. The Foot Guards, world-renowned for their immaculate red tunics and bearskins, donned multi-terrain pattern camouflage uniform to test their operational drills in one of the planet’s toughest environments.

Each year, the National Gendarmerie needs to acquire between 2,000 and 3,000 new vehicles in order to renew part of its fleet which is in great demand. However, with past budget restrictions and budget freezes still slow to be released, the average age of this fleet has increased from four years and ten months in 2010 to seven and a half years now. Army leaders in Europe revealed details Tuesday, Oct. 15, of a massive exercise that will send 20,000 U.S. soldiers to the continent next spring to conduct force projection and readiness training across ten countries. Defender-Europe 20 is slated to be the largest deployment of U.S.-based Soldiers for an exercise to Europe in 25 years. Sean Kimmons, U.S. Army News Service, reports.

From 7 to 13 October, at the Adazi camp in Latvia, the French tank crewmen of the Lynx 6 Tactical Inter-Service Sub-Group (Sous-Groupement Tactique Interarmes, S-GTIA) participated in an inter-alliance exercise gathering the battle tanks of eight nations taking part to the enhanced Forward Presence (eFP). This demonstration of the full operational capability of the soldiers and their armament was organized by the Canadian force, the umbrella organization for eFP in Latvia.

The Defence Chiefs of the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) member countries are in Singapore from 14 to 16 October for the 19th FPDA Defence Chiefs' Conference (FDCC). Chaired by Singapore's Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Lieutenant-General (LG) Melvyn Ong, this year's conference was attended by Australia's CDF, General Angus Campbell; Malaysia's CDF, General Tan Sri Dato' Seri Panglima Hj Zulkifli bin Hj Zainal Abidin; New Zealand's Vice CDF, Air Vice-Marshal Tony Davies; and United Kingdom's Vice Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Tim Fraser.
