Description
The first export variant of the S-300P series was the S-300PMU/SA-10C, which was in most respects identical to the Russian S-300PS/SA-10B and made available in 1989. The S-300 PMU was introduced in 1992 for the export market. The S-300 PMU was specifically designed to improve system mobility and is basically the key element of the S-300P system, repackaged to fit on modified MAZ-543 (8 × 8) cross-country truck chassis. By employing these vehicles, emplacement time on a non-surveyed site is reduced to about 5 minutes. The system is capable of defeating tactical missiles with ranges of up to 300 km at distances of up to 30,000 m. The rate of fire is one missile every 3 to 5 seconds.
The S-300PMU was also supplied with variants of the S-300PS MAZ-7910 based, these being designated 5P85SU/DU respectively. A battery S-300 PMU was equipped with up to four 83P6 fire units, comprising in total twelve (4 x 1 + 2) 5P85SU/5P85DU, each with four 5V55 rounds. The S-300 PMU is intended to defeat current and future targets in all conditions of their employment under intensive ECM and multiple threat environments such as: strategic, tactical and multirole aircraft, strategic cruise missiles, ballistic trajectory air-launched missiles, tactical and theatre ballistic missiles, antiradar missiles. The engagement radar has been modified for the S-300PMU system to permit it to control enlarged batteries of up to 12 launcher vehicles. This has increased the simultaneous engagement capability to six targets with up to two missiles per target allowed. As a result the S-300PMU brigade was reorganised to have six batteries, each with two three-launcher vehicles and an engagement radar. Each reorganised battery has one 5P85SU-launcher command vehicle and one or two simplified 5P58DU launcher vehicles. The 5P85SU is identifiable by the presence of a commander shelter mounted behind the driver compartment, for the 5P85DU there is no shelter behind the driver compartment.

Missile support
The 5P85TE it's four paired missile container launchers mounted to the rear of the semi-trailer, thus avoiding the need to uncouple the tractor unit, hence considerably reducing the time needed to deploy the system. The 5P85TE launchers remain an option for use with the later S-300PMU1 and S-300PMU2 export models of the S-300PM. In firing position, the missiles containers are placed at the vertical to the rear side of the truck. The missiles can be also mounted to the systems 5P85DU and 5P85SU.
Missile
The S-300 PMU uses the missile Fakel 5V55RUD. This missile had further rocket motor improvements to increase the maximum effective engagement range to 90 km and introduced a terminal semi-active radar homing (SARH) guidance mode. The minimum effective range is 5,000 m. Altitude limits are 10 to 27,000 m with target velocity up to 1,200 m/s.
Truck tractor
The S-300 PMU uses the export version launcher unit of the 5P85T, named 5P85TE. The production 5P85TE combines a variant of the legacy 5P85TE semi-trailer with the Ukrainian Kremenchugskiy AvtoZavod 6 x 6 KrAZ-260 tow tractor. The KrAZ-260 entered production in 1979 as an artillery tow tractor, with variants built for a range of military and civil applications. Typical variants are rated in the 9.5 to 10-tonne class. It was introduced to provide a much cheaper TEL compared to the MAZ-543 derived 5P85D/S series, sacrificing off-road mobility in the process, but improving road speed. The S-300 PMU missile system is also fitted to a modified truck chassis 8x8 MAZ-543.
Command and control vehicles
The S-300 PMU uses new upgraded radars, with the surveillance radar for the S-300PMU being designated 64N6E (BIG BIRD) and the illumination and guidance radar being designated 30N6-1. A new option for the S-300 PMU is the new LEMZ 96L6 Cheese Board early warning and acquisition radar, a planar array design with electronic beam steering in elevation, and mechanical steering in azimuth. It is intended as a replacement for the Tin Shield and Clam Shell. The 96L6/96L6E is available in semi-mobile towed versions, a semi-mobile mast-mounted version using variants of the 40V6M/MD, and a fully mobile version on an 8x8 MZKT-7930 vehicle, based on the MAZ-543M chassis.
