Description
The 9K113 Konkurs (NATO code AT-5 Spandrel) is Russian-made Semi-automatic command to line of sight (SACLOS) wire-guided anti-tank missile. The missile was designed and developed by the Russian Defense Company KBP (Konstruktorskoe Buro Priborostroeniya). The 9K113 Konkurs is designed to engage moving and stationary armoured targets provided with explosive reactive armour (ERA) protection. The Konkurs system can be carried by tracked or wheeled armoured vehicle. The 9K113 was introduced in the Russian army in 1977. The missile was seen for the first time during a military parade in Moscow, mounted on a BRDM-2 4x4 armoured vehicle.

Missile
The 9K113 system fires the 9M113 Konkurs missile that is fitted with the 9N131 HEAT warhead for a penetration of 750 to 800mm RHA. The improved 9M113M Konkurs-M. The improvement is a standoff probe with secondary charge for penetrating ERA, otherwise the level penetration remains similar. The 9M113 has the NATO designation AT-5A Spandrel A and the 9M113M is known as the AT-5B Spandrel B. The 9M113M missile has a tandem warhead with an extended nose probe to defeat explosive reactive armour before the main warhead initiates to penetrate 750 to 800mm of main armour. Missile has a semi-automatic control system with command transmission by wires. Missiles are supplied in sealed containers placed directly on the launcher. The Konkurs has a maximum range of 4,000 meters and a minimum range of 100 meters. The operating temperature range is from –50°C to +50°C.
Launcher unit
The 9P135 is the tripod launcher associated with the 9K113 system. The original 9P135 can only fire the 9M111 Fagot missile. The later 9P135M, M1, M2 and M3 are used with both 9M113 Konkurs and 9M111 Fagot missiles. When used with the 9M113 missile additional click-on night vision optics are more common than with the 9M111. The launcher can also be pintle mounted on armored vehicles.
Accessories
The 9P135M1 launcher unit of Konkurs 9K113 can be fitted with thermal imager 1PN65, which weighs 9.6 kg, and allow engagements at range up to 2,500 m.
Combat use
The launcher tracks the position of an incandescent infrared bulb on the back of the missile relative to the target and transmits appropriate commands to the missile via a thin wire that trails behind the missile. The system has an alarm that activates when it detects jamming from a system like Shtora. The operator can then take manual control, reducing the missile to Manual command to line of sight (MCLOS).
