The MDSR is an upgraded version of the widely used SVD sniper rifle. Compared to the baseline model, it has a shorter barrel and a changed gas tube shape. On their junction is a sight, which has previously been in front of the flash suppresser.

The MDSR has received the standard MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail for fitting the sighting equipment. The baseline SVD rifle’s sight attachment assembly on the left side of the barrel extension has been preserved. The rifle is outfitted with a detachable bipod leg and a skeleton stock with a rubber backplate plus a compensator and a cheek piece. The thickened wall barrel ensures a close pattern in intense firing. Used as standard munitions are 7.62x54R mm rounds.

The aiming range with an optic sight is 1,300 m, the effective rate of fire is 30 shots per min. The MDSR is an automatic weapon with gas-operated reloading. The locking is effected by rotating the bolt. The rifle weighs 5.3 kg with an empty magazine without sight and bipod. It has retained the SVD metallic 10 round.
