Czech army needs to replace Soviet-made SA-6 Gainful 2K12 with new air defense missile system.
Czech Republic has launched a new program to purchase new medium-range air defense missile systems to replace old Soviet-made 2K12 Kub (SA-6 Gainful). According DefenseNews website five international companies including Lockheed Martin, MBDA, Kongsberg, Rafael and Diehl have submitted offers to supply medium-range air defense systems to the Czech Ministry of Defense.

Currently, Czech Ministry of Defense would like to see which modern medium-range air defense systems are available on the military market.
 

Under this new defense program, Czech Republic would like to replace old Soviet-made 2K12M KUB-M systems (NATO code SA-6 Gainful) which is in service the Czech armed forces since many years. The system will be decommissioned in 2020, and Czech Army would like to acquire new air defense system before the end of the decommissioning.

In the first phase of this contract, Czech army plans to purchase around 10 new air defense batteries for a total amount of $246 million.

According the first technical requests, the new air defense missile system must be mounted on a wheeled truck chassis supplied by the Czech trucks manufacturer TATRA.

The SA-6 Gainful (Russian denomination 2K12 Kub) is a Russian made low-to-medium-altitude surface-to-air missile system. The SA-6 entered in service with Russian army in 1967 and it was not seen in public until the 1967 Moscow Parade.

The initial version of the Kub missile had the following performance characteristics: minimum effective range 6 to 8,000 m, maximum effective range 22,000 m, minimum effective engagement height 100 to 200 m, maximum effective engagement height 7,000 m. In the latter system versions these figures were improved.
