The United States Marine Corps has contracted Sierra Nevada to provide a dismounted Electronic Countermeasure system. The backpack EW system will be the Modi II, which is one of Sierra Nevada’s Electronic Warfare and Range Instrumentation solutions. In a period where the electromagnetic field becomes an increasingly important area of operations, the Modi II can offer both offensive and defensive applications, including the disruption of radio-controlled improvised explosive devices.

Furthermore, the Modi II system can be not only in backpacks but also in vehicles, fixed sites or even aircraft. It is one of Sierra Nevada’s latest products, many of which are already in used in military counter-IED applications.

The USMC has been already fielding Electronic Warfare systems. In 2014 it awarded Northrop Grumman a USD90 million contract for 240 units of the Freedom 240 dismounted, counter-IED system.
