Five batteries of S-500, the new Russian-made surface-to- air defense missile systems will equip the Russian army under arms program for 2020 , announced Thursday, November 28, 2013, the commander of the aerospace defense troops, Alexander Golovko.
The S-500 is a new generation of Russian-made surface-to-air missile system, designed for intercepting intercontinental ballistic missiles and for defense against Airborne Early Warning and Control, Airborne Warning and Control System, and jamming aircraft.

It was previously announced that the first S-500 missile system will enter in service with the Aerospace Defense Troops of Russian army in 2017.

The new long-range air defense missile system S-500 is expected to become the backbone of a unified aerospace defense system being formed in Russia.

The system will be able to have an extended range of up to 600 km and simultaneously engage up to 10 targets. The S-500 uses a new missile able to destroy any type of aerial threats at a maximum speed of 7 km/sec and an altitude of 200 km.

The Russian military has demanded that the S-500 must be capable of intercepting ballistic missiles and hypersonic cruise missiles

Some elements of the S-500 are now manufactured and the designer Almaz-Antey has already performed the first trial tests.

The S-500 would be deployed in parallel with the S-400 system, which is mostly intended to replace extant Russian S-300 series air defense missile system.
