Our analysis of the first images of this anti-aicraft gun issued by the Iranian press, show that the Sa'eer would be based on the Russian made anti-aircraft gun KS-19 or its Chinese equivalent the Type-59, but now equipped with automatic motorized poistionning system and firing radar.

The Russian 100mm antiaircraft gun KS-19 was introduced in the late 1940s as the replacement for the wartime 85mm guns. It found use in all of the old Warsaw Pact armies, and though it has been largely replaced by surface-to-air guided missiles, the KS-19 is still in use in some armed forces in the world. The KS-19 has a semiautomatic horizontal sliding wedge breechblock, a power rammer, an automatic fuze setter, and is fitted with a long multi-baffle muzzle brake.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the ceremony, Vahidi said the automatic system is assisted by a radar-optic interception system and could fire at targets without crew intervention.

The medium range gun operates at an improved precision compared to its counterparts. The new Sa'eer gun is capable of firing 12 to 15 shells per minute.

Vahidi had earlier informed the media that his ministry planned to supply new air defense systems to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Also, the Iranian Defense Ministry on Wednesday supplied a large number of highly advanced coast-to-sea cruise missiles to the Army's naval forces.

The missiles were delivered to the Navy in a ceremony attended by Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari.

Tehran launched an arms development program during the 1980-88 Iraqi imposed war on Iran to compensate for a US weapons embargo. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles and fighter planes.

Yet, Iranian officials have always stressed that the country's military and arms programs serve defensive purposes and should not be perceived as a threat to any other country.
