The Type 076, designated by NATO as the Yulan-class, is China's largest and most technologically advanced amphibious assault ship developed to date, representing a substantial evolution beyond the Type 075 landing helicopter dock. Description
The Type 076, designated by NATO as the Yulan-class, was developed as the direct successor to the Type 075 Yushen-class after the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) identified the need for an amphibious assault ship capable of projecting air power well beyond the range of helicopters. Development became publicly visible in mid-2020 through procurement requests specifying a radically different configuration from previous Chinese landing helicopter docks. These requirements included two 21 MW gas turbines, six diesel generators, a medium-voltage direct-current Integrated Electric Propulsion (IEP) system, a floodable stern well deck, a dedicated drone operating area, 30-ton aircraft elevators, ammunition elevators and an electromagnetic catapult designed for light fixed-wing aircraft.
Construction of the lead ship, the Sichuan (51), began at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai in October 2023, only three years after the initial technical requirements emerged, before entering an extensive fitting-out and testing phase. Although neither the Chinese Ministry of National Defense nor Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard has disclosed an official procurement cost for the Type 076, most Chinese military analyses estimate a unit construction cost between RMB 10 billion and RMB 20 billion ($1.4-2.8 billion), with the most frequently cited range falling between RMB 10-12 billion ($1.4-1.7 billion). This represents a substantial increase over the estimated RMB 3-3.5 billion cost of a Type 075 landing helicopter dock, placing the Type 076 at roughly three times the cost of its predecessor.
The Sichuan was subsequently officially launched on December 27, 2024, following roughly fourteen months of hull assembly. The vessel entered its first builders' sea trial in November 2025, followed by additional trials in December 2025 and throughout early 2026. During this period, the ship validated its IEP system; conducted dead-load testing of its electromagnetic catapult system; verified its countermeasure launchers, installed arresting cables and numerous onboard systems; completed flight deck markings; and participated in a PLAN exercise in the South China Sea during April 2026 to evaluate shipboard systems and train personnel under realistic conditions. By July 2026, imagery confirmed that the aviation facilities had reached an advanced stage of completion, with delivery to the PLAN expected during 2027 after completion of aircraft qualification and final acceptance trials. Measuring 252.3 meters in length, up to 260 meters overall, with a beam of 45 meters reaching 52 meters across the flight deck, the Type 076 is significantly larger than the preceding Type 075, with an estimated full-load displacement of 50,000 tons, although official Chinese statements describe the ship as exceeding 40,000 tons.
This increase in size can be explained by a substantially larger aviation complex, an integrated electric propulsion system capable of supplying 78 MW of electrical power (equivalent to 105,000 shp), extensive aviation fuel and ammunition storage, additional command-and-control facilities, and the electrical requirements of the electromagnetic launch system. The ship retains its amphibious role through a stern floodable well deck capable of deploying two Type 726 Yuyi-class air-cushion landing craft while simultaneously transporting more than 1,000 embarked marines together with armored vehicles and support equipment. This combination allows the ship to conduct helicopter assaults, launch landing craft and sustain fixed-wing aviation operations from a single vessel. This makes the Type 076, which reuses technologies already developed for the Type 003 aircraft carrier, comparable in size to the U.S. Navy's America-class amphibious assault ships while introducing capabilities not found on any operational amphibious assault ship elsewhere.

Armament
Although the Type 076 is optimized primarily for expeditionary assault and aviation operations rather than fleet air defense, it carries one of the most comprehensive self-protection suites yet installed on a Chinese amphibious assault ship. Its defensive architecture closely follows the philosophy already adopted on China's latest aircraft carriers and major surface combatants by combining rapid-fire close-in weapons, short-range surface-to-air missiles, electronic warfare systems and soft-kill countermeasures into multiple defensive layers. The principal hard-kill defensive armament consists of three H/PJ-11 Type 1130 close-in weapon systems (CIWS). Each mounting incorporates eleven 30 mm barrels and provides an extremely high rate of fire of 10,000 to 11,000 rounds per minute for terminal interception of incoming anti-ship missiles, aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles reaching speeds of up to Mach 4. These gun systems are distributed around the ship to maximize firing coverage over the flight deck and surrounding sectors, for an effective firing range of approximately 3 to 4 kilometers. Medium-range defense is provided by three HHQ-10 short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) launchers, each carrying twenty-four ready-to-fire missiles. The HHQ-10 uses passive infrared and anti-radiation homing to engage threats at ranges of up to 9 km, providing the ship with an additional interception layer beyond the gun systems.
The soft-kill protection system further increases the Type 076's survivability. Design

Official performance data remain limited, but the Type 076 is reported to achieve a maximum speed of 25 knots (46.3 km/h), providing sufficient wind-over-deck for helicopter operations and catapult-assisted fixed-wing launches while allowing the ship to operate alongside modern PLAN carrier and amphibious task groups. No official operational range, cruising speed or endurance figures have been released in the source material. Nevertheless, the combination of a 50,000-ton displacement, integrated electric propulsion and gas-turbine power generation indicates that the ship was designed for sustained blue-water deployments and long-duration expeditionary operations rather than regional coastal missions.

Flight capabilities
The Type 076 was designed around an aviation concept that significantly expands the operational role of an amphibious assault ship beyond traditional helicopter-borne assaults. Its aviation facilities enable the simultaneous operation of helicopters, catapult-launched unmanned aircraft and amphibious forces from a single vessel, allowing aviation missions to continue alongside conventional landing operations. This configuration effectively combines the functions of a landing helicopter dock, helicopter carrier and unmanned aviation carrier within one expeditionary warship.
The rotary-wing air group is expected to include virtually the entire inventory of PLAN naval helicopters. Aircraft identified for operation from the class include the Changhe Z-8 heavy transport helicopter, Z-10 attack helicopter, Z-18 family, Harbin Z-9, Z-20 medium utility helicopter and the future Z-21. Development imagery has also shown mock-ups of Ka-28 and Ka-31 helicopters, indicating that anti-submarine warfare, airborne early warning, troop transport, logistics, search-and-rescue and assault support missions are all intended to be conducted from the ship. The defining element of the Type 076's aviation capability is its ability to operate fixed-wing unmanned aircraft using carrier-style launch and recovery procedures. Current assessments identify the GJ-21 carrier-capable stealth unmanned combat aerial vehicle as the principal aircraft intended for the class, together with the GJ-11 flying-wing UCAV, WZ-7 high-altitude reconnaissance drone and future carrier-capable unmanned systems. During development, a navalized GJ-21 mock-up was observed aboard the lead ship during sea trials, while official computer-generated imagery has depicted multiple GJ-21 aircraft operating from the flight deck.
