Aegis Ashore in Romania is now active
The Aegis Ashore at Deveslu Air Force Base in Romania is now active after the United States Navy certified the operational status of the system. This milestone completes Phase II of the European Phased Adaptive Approach project, which will provide ballistic missile protection to Europe and the US forces deployed there.

The ceremony that took place on 12 May coincides with the start of the other Aegis Ashore site in Poland, the ceremony for which will take place on 13 May 2016.

The main component of the Lockheed Martin-developed system is the SPY-1 radar and the Aegis combat management system. The development of the shore-based version required a minimum time as the system has already been operational with the US Navy’s surface Arleigh Burke and Ticonderoga-class units.

According to Lockheed Martin, elements of the Aegis Ashore Weapon System for Poland are currently under production and the US Missile Defence Agency is expected to award in due time the contract for the installation and test of the system.

Brendan Scanlon, Director of the Aegis Ashore programmes at Lockheed Martin, said: “It’s fitting that work on the Poland site begins just as Aegis Ashore’s important mission in Romania officially commences. The lessons learned and incredible teamwork that brought the Aegis Combat System ashore will lead to even greater cost-savings and efficiencies for the Missile Defense Agency, the U.S. Navy and the sailors who protect the country and its allies.”
