Pakistan to allow airlifted of U.S. military equipment to the Afghan security forces
 
Pakistan on Monday, May 5, 2014, allowed military equipment to be airlifted from its airports to the Afghan security forces, officials said. Pakistan and the United States had signed a Memorandum of Understanding in July, 2012 which deals with the use of Pakistan Lines of Communications, to/from Afghanistan.

Iran announced Sunday, May 4, 2014, the successful test-firing of the country’s new air defense system, Mersad, which is capable of destroying different types of modern fighter jets and drones. The Mersad system was test-fired after a home-made missile named Shalamcheh successfully hit a Karrar-type drone.

Ukrainian army launches new military operations in the city of Mariupol southeastern Ukraine
 
The Ukrainian army has started an operation against pro-autonomy activists in the city of Mariupol, southeastern Ukraine, as well as the town of Konstantinovka. The troops have moved into Mariupol and have surrounded an administrative building held by anti-government protesters. The protesters have set up barricades and are burning tires.

New military offensive by Ukrainian troops to retake control of Pro-Russian separatists cities
 
Ukraine´s army on Saturday, May 3, 2014, broadened a military offensive to retake control of rebel-held towns and cities in the chaotic east of the country, the Ukrainian interior ministry said. The Ukrainian government and the West believe that the Kremlin is fomenting the chaos in a bid to destabilise the former Soviet republic ahead of planned May 25 elections.

Pro-Russian forces in Slovyansk have shot down a Ukrainian Mi-24 attack helicopter, killing one airman and wounding others, after the army launched an operation against the separatist stronghold. Ukraine's SBU security service on Friday, May 2, 2014, said one Mi-24 gunship had been shot down, killing one airman and leading to the capture of another.

Turkey extends the bids for the purchase of a new air defense missile system
 
Turkey has extended the validity of bids in a multi-billion dollar missile defense system tender for the second time despite having provisionally awarded the deal to China, a senior Turkish defense official said. In September 2013, Turkey has selected the Chinese-made FD-2000, but U.S. claims that the FD-2000 may not be compatible with the existing NATO defense network.

Saudi Arabia concluded a large-scale military exercise with a display of its Chinese- made Dongfeng 3 ballistic missiles this week, showcasing the missiles for the first time. The Dongfeng 3 (DF-3) has a range of up to 3,300 kilometers, and can carry two-ton warheads. It can be used to strike targets that are much closer than the maximum range.

United Kingdom to order MBDA land version of FLAADS Future Local Area Air Defence System
 
A £36M contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has been placed with MBDA for the Land variant of the Future Local Area Air Defence System (FLAADS Land). This will fund an Assessment Phase that will demonstrate the adaptation and evolution of core weapon system subsystems (e.g. command & control) for the land environment, and prepare for the transition from Rapier Field Standard C (FSC) in British Army service.
