Russia: TsNIITOCHMASH designs 9mm cartridge with slower bullet speed for Udav pistol

The Central Research Institute of Precision Machine-Building (TsNIITOCHMAH) of Rostec designed a 9mm cartridge with slower bullet speed. It can pierce armored vests (bulletproof jackets) of the 2-class protection and has low-signature shot, Rostec said.

"Available cartridges for silent fire cannot pierce the armored vest of the 2-class protection because of insufficient bullet speed of 200-290 m/sec. Bullets of 400 m/sec can fulfil the task, but they do not provide noiseless fire. The new design of TsNIITOCHMASH combines silence and increased piercing capability," it said.

The bullet of the new cartridge pierces an armored vest of the second protection class. The shot is silent without flare. The bullet weight has been increased and a cutting edge of two flat blades has been added to the front of the slug.

The cartridge was designed for Udav pistol and has been patented.
