The
T-72UA1 is a modernized version of the Soviet-made main battle tank
T-72. This tank is fitted with new armour, new engine and has now the
capacity to launch anti-tank missile. The T-72UA1 is in service with
the Ukrainian armed forces. In December 2014, Ukrainian army has received
several main battle tanks including T-72UA1.

Armament |
The
T-72UA1 is fitted with a two-man turret mounted in the centre
of the hull. The main armament consists of one 125 mm 2A46M-1
smoothbore gun with a carousel magazine and automatic loader.
A 7.62mm light machine gun is mounted to the right of the main
armament. The commander’s cupola is armed with a 12.7mm
NSVT heavy machine gun. A total of eight smoke grenade dischargers
are mounted to the left side of the turret. The main gun is
able to fire the 9M119 Svir laser beam riding, guided anti-tank
missiles. Its dimensions are the same as those of the standard
artillery rounds. Therefore, it is loaded in a cell of the carousel
magazine of the automatic loader in the same way as the standard
projectile.

Design
and protection |
The
overall layout of the T-72UA1 is similar to the T-72 MBT series
with the driver's compartment at the front, two-man turret in
the centre and engine and transmission at the rear. The glacis
plate is of the laminate type for improved protection against
kinetic energy and HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) attack. Additional
explosive armour bricks are fitted at the front of the hull.
The front of the turret is protected with Nozh explosive reactive
armor. The turret roof between the commander's and gunner's
hatches has been provided with additional protection against
top attack weapons and a collar of rubber skirts hangs from
the turret front which is believed to reduce the signature of
the T-72UA1 and deflect top attack bomblets. The hull is covered
by Kontakt explosive reactive armour which provides protection
against both APFSDS and HEAT attacks. Two light steel stowage
boxes are mounted on the turret, one at the rear and the other
on the right slightly behind the commander's position.
|
Mobility |
The
T-72UA-1 is motorized with a 5TDFMA turbocharged engine, developing
1 050 hp. The T-72UA1 can run at a maximum road speed of 65
km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km. The torsion bar
suspension each side of the T-72UA1 consists of six roadwheels
with the idler at the front, drive sprocket at the rear and
three return rollers supporting the inside of the track only.
Shock-absorbers are fitted at the first, second and sixth roadwheel
stations. The upper part of the suspension is covered by side
skirts with the forward part either side of the driver's position
providing additional armour protection. The tank can also be
fitted with two auxiliary drum-type tanks at the rear of the
hull carrying another 200 litres each. |
Accessories |
The
T-72UA1 is fitted with the 9K120 guided weapons system, dubbed
Svir, enables the crew to fire guided missile while the vehicle
is stationary, day and night, to a range of 100 to 4,000m. A
large infra-red searchlight is on the left of the 125 mm smoothbore
gun and one small infra-red light is mounted on the top of the
gunner hatch. Standard equipment of the T-72UA1 includes snorkels
for deep fording operations, which are carried on the turret
rear when not required, an overpressure-type NBC protection
system, night vision equipment for all three crew members, unditching
beam carried across the hull rear and a laser warning device
activated by laser range-finders, laser designators or precision-guided
munitions fitted with a laser guidance device. |
