Description

The Badger is an 8x8 armoured vehicle based on the Finnish armoured vehicle Patria AMV, which will replace the Ratel 6x6 personnel carrier currently in service with the South African Army. The Badger is a combination of a South African-modified version of the Finnish Patria AMV vehicle and a South African Denel turret LCT30. The vehicle platform has been customized for the South African specific requirements in terms of landmine protection and internal layout. The Badger is a new generation 8x8 ICV (Infantry Combat Vehicle) designed to provide soldiers with effective protection and offensive firepower in high-intensity warfare, while enabling them to dismount from the vehicle and freely interact with civilians during peace-enforcement operations. ARMSCOR (Armaments Corporation of South Africa SOC Ltd) concluded a contract with Denel in 2007 for the development of a new generation infantry combat vehicle. The initial development of the vehicle platform was done by the Finnish contractor, Patria, but the manufacturing of the production units will be migrated to South Africa. This will enhance South Africa’s vehicle design, manufacture and support capability. The final product will, however, be more than 70% local content, designed and customized to meet the unique requirements of operational deployment in an African environment. In September 2013, South Africa's state arms acquisition agency has awarded a contract to Denel Land Systems (DLS) for 200 Badger 8x8 armoured vehicle for the South African army.

Armament

The IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) Badger variant will be equipped with a South African two-man turret LCT30 designed and manufactured at Denel Land Systems in Lyttelton. The Denel LCT30 turret is armed with a GI-30 Cam Gun 30mm gun and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. Turret traverse and weapon elevation are electro-mechanical and fully stabilized in elevation and traverse. The turret can be rotated on 360° with an elevation from -10° to +30° and is equipped with double-handed control for the gunner and commander. The GI-30 is an externally driven electro-mechanical cannon, utilizing a drum-cam to cycle the breech to chamber rounds and extract spent cartridges. This reduces gases in the confines of a turret and improves the controlled firing rate. DLS designed the GI-30 to fire link-less 30 x 173mm ammunition through a dual feeder – a world-first for this kind of weapon. As a single-shot weapon, it is also unique for its sniper mode of operation. It is fired from a closed-breech position, which offers more accurate fire because no movement takes place immediately before the round is fired. It has an effective range of 4,000 meters and can fire up to 100 rounds per minute. The turret is fitted with a fire control system that able the vehicle to fire on the move during night and day. The GI-30 Cam Gun uses SAPHEI, APFSDS (Armoured Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot) and TPT (Target Practice Type) ammunition types, designed and manufactured by Denel PMP, another company in the Denel Group, as well as ammunition from Oerlikon and Nammo.

Design & Protection

The Badger is based on the Patria AMV 8x8 armoured vehicle, but the internal layout has been adapted to response on the requirements of the South African army. The Badger is made in all-welded steel armour which provides protection against firing of small arms and shell splinters. The vehicle is fitted with the LMT Flat Floor Technology (certified by the CSIR in 2005) to increase the protection against landmines and IEDs. The Badger can resist to a blast of 8 kg of TNT under the vehicle. The power is at the front right with the driver at the front left, the turret is on the middle of the hull and the troop's compartment at the rear. The rear part of the vehicle is fitted with a two parts door which allows the infantry to dismount from the Badger quickly. The Badger has a combat weight of 26,600 kg and measures 8.27 long, 2.83 m wide and 3.44 meters high.

Mobility

The Badger could use the same Diesel engine as the Patria AMV, a Scania DC13 turbocharged with a power of 483 hp. The Badger uses an 8x8 chassis and can run at a maximum road speed of 108 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 800 km. The Badger is equipped with a run-flat system that is controlled from inside the vehicle by the driver.

Accessories

Standard equipment of the Badger includes panoramic sight and TV cameras for the commander sight and day TV camera, third generation thermal imager, and back-up optical vision system for the gunner sight. The Badger is also equipped with a fire detection and suppression system, NBC system, air conditioning system, central tire inflation system, radios, intercom, and night vision equipment.
