United States President Barack Obama has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the USA will always have “Israel’s back”. Attempting to head off any premature strike against Iran over its nuclear programme the president said there is still time for diplomacy:

“The USA will always back Israël when it comes to Israel’s security. This is a bond that is based not only on our mutual security interests and economic interests, but is also based on common values and the incredible people-to-people contacts that we have between our two countries”.

Israel is convinced Iran’s nuclear programme is aimed at developing atomic weapons and has described Iran as a danger to the world. Tehran denies the accusation.

Obama has said the bond between the USA and Israel is unbreakable and that he will not hesitate to use force to stop Iran obtaining nuclear weapons.

But he says that Iran is isolated and there is still an opportunity for diplomacy to succeed.
