The RS-24 (code NATO SS-X-29), missile with solid fuel and three floors, is a more powerful version of RS-12M2 Topol-M missile. The first firing test of the RS-24 was proceeded in May 2007 from the site of Plessetsk (Russia). Its performances were not revealed until now.

At the end of November, the commander of the Russian strategic ballistic Troops (RVSN), the general Sergueï Karakaïev, announced that its troops will not use the mobile version of the intercontinental missile Topol-M to the profit of multiple warheads missile RS-24 Iars.

The new missile has to replace the out-of-date missile systems with RS-18 and RS-20 (Stiletto and Satan, according to the classification of NATO). In the future, the RS-24 will constitute, with the Topol-M (RS-12M2), the main core of the Russian Strategic Missile Troops.
