The SCAR®, is a modular rifle designed and developed by the Belgian Fabrique Nationale de Herstal in cooperation with the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) to satisfy the requirements of the SCAR (Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle) competition.

This family of rifles consist of two main types, the SCAR-L and the SCAR-H. Early 2004, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) issued a solicitation for a family of Special Forces Combat Assault Rifles, the so-called SCAR, designed around two different calibers but featuring high commonality of parts and identical ergonomics.

The SCAR® system consists of two highly adaptable modular rifle platforms, i.e. the 5.56x45mm NATO SCAR®-Light (or SCAR®-L) and the 7.62x51mm NATO SCAR®-Heavy (or SCAR®-H), and an enhanced grenade launcher module (EGLM or FN40GL®). Both SCAR® platforms are available with two different barrel lengths: a CQC barrel for Close Quarter Combat and a Standard barrel (STD) for longer distances.

At the same time, FN Herstal presents its latest innovation of medium ramp pintle mounted system for helicopter armed with 12.7mm machine gun. FN pintle systems for aircraft, vehicle and naval applications are now serving with America’s warfighters in hostile environments around the globe, providing them with a significant firepower advantage in every operational engagement.

Taking advantage of its leading position in firearms design and manufacturing, FN Herstal started to expand its product portfolio by developing and producing integrated weapon systems for installation onto or into major aircraft types.

More than just selling weapon systems, FN Herstal develops the complete integration of the system together with the helicopter manufacturer or directly with the end user, supervises the installation of all its products and provides operator training as well as a high quality after-sales service to meet the customers' requirements.

FN Herstal's airborne pintle weapon systems can integrate two different weapons - a 7.62x51mm NATO FN MAG®58M or a .50 cal FN M3M (GAU-21) machine gun - and feature three different configurations - either window-, floor- or ramp-mounted.
