With the purchase of T-90S MBTs, the Iraqi armed forces will increase the fire power of its tank battalions with latest generation of Russian-made main battle tanks.

On July 2008, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced Iraq’s formal request to buy M1 Abrams main battle tanks. With this purchase, Iraq became the 4th M1 Abrams operator in the Middle East, joining Egypt (M1A1s), Kuwait (M1A2), and Saudi Arabia (M1A2-SEP variant).

The T-90S entered in service with the Russian army in 1992 and in February 2001 the Indian Army signed a contract to purchase 310 T-90S main battle tanks. The T-90S is manufactured by the Russian Company by Uralvagonzavod based in Nizhnyi Tagil, Russia.

The T-90S is the export version of the T-90 MBT. The first prototype of the T-90 was produced in 1989 and serial production started in 1992. The T-90S is armed with one 125mm 2A46M smoothbore gun able to fire standard ammunition as APDS (Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot), HEAT (high-explosive anti-tank), HE-FRAG (high-explosive fragmentation), but also the 9M119 Refleks (NATO designation AT-11 Sniper) anti-tank guided missile.

The T-90SK tank is designed to provide command and control over subordinate units, facilitate communications with superior commanders, and conduct operations as part of units and subunits.
The T-90SK is fitted with additional antenna’s mounted on the roof turret and sometimes APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) at the rear of the hull.

This command tank is a derivative of the T-90S tank and is distinguished by an R-168-100KBE HF radio set, TNA-4-3 tank navigation equipment set and PAB-2M aiming circle.

The main armament, protection systems, power plant, transmission, running gear, vision devices, deep-water fording kit, self-entrenching equipment, and mine-clearing equipment mountings are similar to those used on the standard T-90S MBT.
