U.S. Soldiers have tested General Motors Chevy Colorado ZH2 hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicle.
End of June, U.S. soldiers with the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) tested the Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle which was unveiled last year at at the AUSA Defense Exhibition in Washington D.C.

The Chevy Colorado ZH2 is a hydrogen fuel-cell electric 4×4 vehicle, which is developed in collaboration between the Company General Motors and the U.S. Army. The ZH2 is basically a modified Chevy Colorado, fitted with a hydrogen fuel cell and electric drive.

The ZH2 vehicle provides several benefits when compared to an other military vehicle, such as the Humvee. The ZH2 is more fuel/energy efficient, it uses Hydrogen as fuel and not diesel.

The electric ZH2 is much quieter and has a lower heat signature. It can tackle difficult off-road terrain, and it can also supply electricity to feed other equipment. The ZH2 has a radically reduced thermal signature because it doesn't operate as hot as a diesel engine, which means the heat signature is harder to pick up by enemy thermal sensors, providing additional stealth for Soldiers.

Most of he U.S. Army vehicles use Diesel which costs around $13 billion per year. According U.S. Army engineer, with the ZH-2 vehicle, the fuel cell sips fuel at less than half the rate of a Humvee.

The hydrogen-powered fuel cell in the ZH2 runs nearly silent, can export up to 25 kW of electric power and generate up to two gallons of useable water per hour from its only emission, which is water vapor.
