Israeli Special Forces entered northern Gaza tonight to take out a number of missile launch sites, according to the Israeli military. Brig.-Gen. Moti Almoz told Israel Radio on Saturday, July 13, 2014, that there were still “many” targets in the Gaza Strip remaining. While air force sorties will continue, the army high command is simultaneously preparing for a ground incursion.

A senior Israeli army official says 2,000 rockets and mortar shells have been destroyed in Gaza since the beginning of Operation “Protective Edge” on Tuesday. According to army intelligence, Hamas possessed 6,000 rockets and mortars before the operation began.

The IDF said that it had struck 60 terror targets in the Hamas-ruled enclave. Since the operation began, Israeli aircraft have hit over 1,160 Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip, the military said.

On the ground, the al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Palestinian group the Islamic Jihad, said on Saturday that its fighters had clashed with Israeli special forces trying to advance into Gaza.

According IsraelDefense website, during the night of Saturday, four soldiers of the Naval Commandos (Flotilla 13) were slightly injured in an exchange of gunfire with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. According to the IDF Spokesperson, the wounded soldiers were part of a force that raided a site from which long-range rockets were fired at Israel. The IDF reported that the target was attacked and hit. All four soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon.

Israel’s air force will continue to pound targets in the Gaza Strip over the course of at least the next 24 hours, the IDF Spokesperson said on Saturday.

Some 20,000 reservists have already been mobilized, the army said.
