The purpose of the reorganization was "to retain the capacity of the PDF to fulfil the roles assigned to the greatest extent possible within the strength ceiling of 9,500 and the significantly reduced resource envelope resulting from the fiscal difficulties of the country," said a press release from the Irish government.

No reduction in the strength of the Irish Armed Forces will result from the reorganization plan announed on Tuesday, July 17, 2012.

A central element of the reorganization was "to reduce the number of personnel engaged in headquarters, administrative and allied support tasks and to redeploy posts to 'front line' operational units," said the press release.

Ireland closed four barracks in March 2012. According to Alan Shatter, minister for justice, equality and defense, no further barrack closures were being considered in the context of this reorganization program.
