John Cockerill Defense (previously CMI Defence) has confirmed that its private venture Protected Weapon Station Generation 2 (CPWS Gen 2) finished trials in late 2019 and is now at Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL 7), meaning it is an operationally demonstrated prototype, Christopher Foss reports.

Florence Parly, Minister of the Armies, welcomes the delivery of the first O-NYX night vision binoculars in the 21st regiment of Frejus. Designed by Thales, these binoculars benefit from an improved resolution and a wider field of vision. It will allow army soldiers to better progress in darkness and will replace the LUCIE binoculars that are currently used. Designed to ensure the maintenance of operational superiority of the French armies, LPM 2019-2025 focuses on improving the equipment and protection of the soldiers, sailors and pilots engaged in operations.

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering), a global technology, defence and engineering group, announced that, for the fourth quarter of 2019, its business sectors secured more than $1.5b of new contracts, bringing the full year 2019 contract value to $7b. On Jan.29, the U.S. Army announced the selection of 20 small business and technology firms to advance to Phase III of the xTechSearch 4.0 technology prize competition. xTechSearch is an Army-sponsored competition focused on finding technologies with both defense and commercial applications that have been developed by American technology entrepreneurs and small businesses, Signal reports.

Robotic Research LLC introduced the Pegasus Mini, at CES 2020 (Las Vegas). The Mini is a smaller version of the original Pegasus, introduced in August, which established a new category of transformable unmanned autonomous vehicles (hybrid unmanned aircraft system/unmanned ground vehicle) that both drive on land and fly. This patented combination of features provides a new range of capabilities to support commercial industry, first responders, law enforcement and military customers that previously had not been possible with autonomous drones or land vehicles.

Japan and U.S. armed forces will conduct training exercise Northern Viper at Hokudaien and Yausubetsu Training Areas in the Hokkaido Prefecture of Japan from Jan. 26 to Feb. 8, 2020. On the 30th of December 2019, the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) awarded the sixth contract amendment on the Scorpion programme to the consortium formed by Nexter, Arquus and Thales. This latest award, known as MEPAC2, covers the delivery of 54 additional Griffon multi-role armored vehicles (VBMR 3) equipped with Thales' 120mm 2R2M (Rifled Recoiled Mounted Mortar) system, reaching the total number of Griffon vehicles on the Scorpion program to 1,872 in accordance with the Military Planning Law 2019-2025.

Acceptance trials of Gibka-S mobile air defense missile system for the Ground Forces were completed in late 2019, the Zvezda weekly writes. Gibka-S destroys aircraft at low altitudes and a speed of 400 m/sec. It can also fight airplanes, helicopters and drones. The missiles can destroy troops and engineering fortifications.
