"For the first time a unique air defense complex goes on combat duty on the territory of Crimea. It will enhance combat capabilities of air defense forces and provide reliable air protection for the Crimean population," Sevastyanov said. He added the new complex will defend both Crimea and a part of Krasnodar region.

The Sebastopol-Feodosiya anti-aircraft regiment received the latest S-400 Triumph system in 2016. The personnel of the regiment were successfully retrained to operate it and in August last year trial missile fire was conducted in the framework of the Caucasus-2016 staff and command exercise.

The S-400 Triumph is a Russian air defense long and medium-range new-generation missile system designated to destroy existing and perspective aerospace attack weapons. It is capable of simultaneous fire with 72 missiles at 36 targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers. S-400 can destroy cruise missiles, aircraft and helicopters, as well as ballistic targets flying at a speed of up to 4.8 kilometers per second at altitudes ranging from several meters to dozens of kilometers.
