According to official German sources, the German Ministry of Defense is favorable for a system developed for Sweden by Diehl Defense, a German Company which has already developed and manufactured different types of air defense systems.

Currently German army uses the Short-Range Air Defense System Ozelot mounted on a Wiesel 2 light tracked armored vehicle. The Ozelot vehicle carries four ready-to-fire Stinger surface-to-air missiles.

According to the press agency Reuters, the new German air defense system could be a variant of the IRIS-T mounted on a tracked vehicle built by Hagglunds Vehicle AB, a unit of BAE Systems.

An alternative to Diehl’s system, built by US-based weapons manufacturer Raytheon, is called the Network Centric Air Defense System. According to Raytheon, this weapon has been sold to Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Oman and the United States, and is the result of a collaborative effort with Kongsberg Gruppen of Norway. Slovakia and Belgium are also reportedly looking to expand their short-range missile capabilities.

In March 2016, Sweden has inked a contract to purchase the surface-launched IRIS-T missile as the basis for its new ground-launched air defense system. IRIS-T SLS is a ground-launched version of the IRIS-T air-to-air missile, designed to enhance Sweden's air defense and object protection by providing 360° defence against a wide range of threats, including missiles, helicopters, aircraft, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

In the Swedish army the IRIS-T SLS air defense missile system is mounted on a trailer towed by a BvS 10 all-terrain tracked vehicle.
