Troops of the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, a unit of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of U.S. Army , will serve as advisers to the Afghan national security forces, Army officials said Friday.

The Fort Drum soldiers will deploy later this winter after completing a mission rehearsal exercise this month at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La., the Army said.

The 10th Mountain Division soldiers at Fort Drum are one of the most frequently deployed units in the Armed Services, and continue to serve advisory and training roles in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, will deploy 1,300 soldiers from its 2nd Brigade Combat Team to Iraq this spring in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, according to an Army press release.
