BPM-97 Vystrel Kamaz-43269 APC
4x4 Armored Personnel Carrier vehicle - Russia
The BPM-97 (Boyevaya Pogranichnaya Machina for Battle Vehicle of the Border guard) or Vystrel is the Russian military designation for the KAMAZ 43269 Vestrel 4x4 wheeled armored vehicle. The BPM-97 is based on the truck chassis Kamaz 4326 and as the name suggests was designed for the Russian Border Guards. The Company’s principal collaborator and the author of the technical concept, layout, major specifications and dimensions are Moscow-based Bauman Technical University. The BPM-97 was presented for the first time to the public during the defense exhibition of Abu Dhabi (UAE) in 2007. The BPM-97 wheeled armored vehicle is designed to carry border guards and to enable them to respond to armed provocations adequately. The latest model has bulletproof side windows and no gun turret. It has been ordered by Kazakhstan and by the MVD Internal Troops and EMERCOM. The development of the BPM-97 began in 1997, after a request to replace the main transport border guards, the GAZ-66. But after a government funding default in 1998 and the much delayed public funding of the project finally stopped. In order to offset the cost of the development in the absence of government orders, machines were allowed to be sold to civilian companies. The armored vehicle was used for the transportation of explosives, money, and valuable goods. After receiving permission in 2005, some cars were sold to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Production of the "Vystrel" is ongoing at the "Vystrel" plant in Naberezhnye Chelny, where the armored body and KAMAZ 4326 truck chassis are integrated.
BPM-97 Vystrel KAMAZ-43269 main variants:
- SBA-60K2 Bulat: is a development of the BPM-37 Vystrel based on a 6x6 chassis.
The BPM-97 can be also configured as a command vehicle, armored ambulance, patrol, and firefighting vehicle.
Armament varies, the BPM-97 is available with pintle-mounted or turret-mounted 7.62 mm, 12.7 mm machine guns such as the Kord 12.7mm, 14.5 mm KPV heavy machineguns in a BTR-80 type turret, and a combination turret fitted with a sighting device with 30 mm cannon and 30 mm AGS-30 automatic grenade launchers. The sighting system is mounted coaxially with the weapons and a searchlight is mounted coaxially above the armament. The turret is equipped with an all-round observation system for operators, an increased efficiency night sighting/observation channel, the OU-2 illuminator, a standard anti-air type periscopic sight and the turret race ring whose mounting dimensions are the same as those of the BTR-80A, wheeled armored vehicle personnel carrier, which is in service to the Russian Armed Forces. According to Russian sources, the 30 mm cannon have an effective range of 2,000 m when firing armor-piercing tracer projectiles and 4,000 m when firing high-explosive incendiary projectiles. The maximum range of aimed 7.62 mm machine gun fire is quoted as 1,500 m. A 7.62 mm PKTM coaxial machine gun is mounted to the right side of the 30 mm gun. Any turret currently installed on Russian wheeled armored personnel carrier can be mounted on its chassis. For his self-protection, a series of three smoke-grenade launchers are mounted on the left and right sides of the main armament.
|Design and protection|
The hull of the BMP-97 is welded from armor steel, which provides the crew with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters of the battlefield. The upper part of the shell withstands hits from a 12.7x108mm - NSV machine gun with a distance of 300 meters, the lower part from 7.62x54mmR SVD rifles with a distance of 30 m. The vehicle is divided into the engine compartment and separate crew areas. The body has both side and rear doors, and roof hatches for exiting. The front arc can withstand 12.7-mm heavy machine gun rounds. The vehicle has a V-shaped hull for improved mine blast protection. The BPM-97 provides seating for up to 10 troops, including the driver and commander. The mounted riflemen can fire their individual weapons over side walls, through side firing ports closed with armor plates or through the open roof hatches. The troop’s compartment is at the rear of the chassis, each side is fitted with two small bullet-proof windows. Two doors are mounted at the rear of the hull, which provides the infantry soldiers to enter and leave quickly from the vehicle. The driver and the commander of the vehicle sat at the front of the vehicle and have a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the rear.
