Kongsberg to deliver Protector M151 Remote Weapon Stations to upgrade Piranha III of Irish Army.
KONGSBERG has signed a contract for the delivery of PROTECTOR Remote Weapon Stations (RWS) for the Piranha III upgrade program in Ireland. The Irish Defence Force is expected to upgrade its entire Piranha III fleet with PROTECTOR M151 systems over the next five years. This contract supports the first set of these upgrade and deliveries of the PROTECTOR are planned in September 2014.

The PROTECTOR RWS is designed for small and medium caliber weapons and can be installed on any type of platform. It is a fully stabilized and is a combat proven system qualified for global operations.

The PROTECTOR RWS protects military troops by allowing the vehicle's weapons to be operated from a protected position inside the vehicle. As of 2013 the PROTECTOR has been chosen by 17 nations and KONGSBERG continues to be the world’s leading provider of Remote Weapon Stations.

The Irish Defenses Forces are equipped with a total of 78 Mowah Piranha IIIH in 6 variants, including armoured personnel carrier, command vehicle, ambulance vehicle, recovery vehicle, close recce vehicle and medium recce vehicle.

The Piranha IIIH was originally produced for Denmark and is not amphibious. Besides automotive differences, the H version is 3 cm longer than the standard Piranha III and has the highest level of protection of all the LAV series vehicles due to a composite armor suite.

The Irish Defence Forces chose the Piranha to replace their old Panhard M3 APC's.
