This rifle was show for he first time in 2004 and could be replaced the old German-made 7.62x51 HK G3 which is currently the standard assault rifle in service with the Iranian armed forces.

Khaybar KH 2002 assault rifle can be best described as a bullpup conversion of the Iranian S-5.56 rifle, which is a direct copy of the Chinese CQ assault rifle. The KH-2002 is very similar to the Chinese assault rifle QBZ-95 or Type 95.

The QBZ-95 or Type 95 is a bullpup style assault rifle manufactured by Arsenal 266, part of Norinco and Arsenal 296, under Jianshe Corp, China South for the Chinese Army.

The KH2002 "Khaybar" is an Iranian designed assault rifle, derived from the DIO S 5.56 assault rifle and further developed by Iran's Defense Industries Organization (DIO).

Khaybar KH 2002 assault rifle is gas operated, selectively fired rifle of bullpup layout. It uses M16-type direct gas system with multi-lugrotary bolt locking. Polymer pistol grip with enlarged trigger guard is attached below the tubular barrel shroud.

This weapon is chambered for the standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition, with an effective range of 420m. The KH-2002 Khaybar is compatible with the standard NATO (M16-type) magazines, holding 20 or 30 rounds.
