The Russian Strategic Missile Forces will be manned with 30,000 contract personnel by 2018, spokesman Major Dmitry Andreyev said on Wednesday, August 13.
Strategic Missile Forces operate all Russian ground-based missiles with range other 1,000km

“Considering further efforts to re-equip the Russian Strategic Missile Forces with new missile systems and the need to operate and provide maintenance for modern armaments and combat hardware, the number of personnel serving under contract is set at 18,000 servicemen in 2014 and will be increased to 30,000 by 2018,” the spokesman said.

There are currently about 16,000 contract servicemen in the Russian Strategic Missile Forces who mostly serve as driver mechanics of launch systems, technicians, team heads, platoon commanders, sergeants-major of units and specialists in highly required specialties, the spokesman said.

It was reported early last year that the share of contract personnel in the Russian Strategic Missile Forces would rise to 60% in 2013-2017. In early 2014, this share stood at 33% (about 14,000 servicemen).
