IRIS-T SL Diehl Defence
Surface-to-Air Defense Missile System - Germany
The IRIS-T SL is a mobile air defense missile system designed and developed by the German company Diehl Defense using an advanced version of the IRIS-T, an air-to-air guided missile that entered into service with the German Air Force in December 2005. IRIS-T was developed by a six-nation consortium with Germany as the lead nation. In addition, Greece, Italy, Norway, Spain and Sweden are participating in the series production program. The industrial prime contractor Diehl Defence and the partner companies started a series of production missile deliveries in 2005. IRIS-T was officially introduced into service in the six program partners’ Air Forces at the end of 2005. In addition to the six participating IRIS-T program nations, the Typhoon users Austria and Saudi Arabia procured the IRIS-T missile. Moreover, South Africa and Thailand selected the IRIS-T missile for their Gripen combat aircraft. The Royal Thai Air Force is operating IRIS-T on their F-16 fleet, too. By 2022, Diehl Defense has developed two versions including the IRIS-T SLS (short-range) and IRIS-T SLM (Medium Range). A third version is already in development, the IRIS-T SLX (Lon Range) equipped with a dual-mode (IR and RF) seeker. The IRIS-T SL has been optimized for 360° protection of objects, areas and mobile troop units in current and future mission scenarios in mobile and stationary 24/7 operation, in all weather conditions, with minimum personnel and least logistic effort. The IRIS-T SLM air defense system is designed to engage and destroy a wide range of aerial threats including modern fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, drones and tactical attack missiles as well as short-range ballistic missiles. Even helicopters and aircraft featuring small radar cross-sections and extreme maneuverability can be hit directly. High hit probability is achieved through precise control of the missile during terminal approach by a high-resolution, imaging IR seeker rendering countermeasures, including blinding lasers, ineffective.
IRIS-T air defense missile system variants:
- IRIS-T SLS: Short-range version with a range of 12 km
- IRIS-T SLM: Medium-range with a range of 40 km and a maximum altitude of 20 km
- IRIS-T SLX: Long-range version with a range of 80 km and a maximum altitude of 30 km.
The launcher vehicle of the IRIS-T SL can be based on a truck chassis or a tracked armored chassis. In the firing position, the container missile launchers are erected in the vertical position at the rear of the vehicle. The TEL (Transporter Erector Launcher) vehicle can deploy up to eight missiles.
The IRIS-T SL is a surface-to-air version of the IRIS-T a short-range air-to-air missile. The missile is able to intercept fast-moving and miniature targets, such as air-to-air/surface-to-air missiles and air-to-surface/surface-to-surface missiles and rockets, UAV/drones, and cruise missiles; to improve the probability of a direct hit, the missile is equipped with an active radar proximity fuze. The seeker-assisted radar proximity fuze and the large warhead give the missile a remarkable antimissile capability. Predictive flight path tracking and lock-on-after-launch features enable the missile to engage targets in the rear hemisphere as well. The IRCCM (infrared countermeasure ) and DIRCCM (Directional Infrared Counter Measures ) capabilities of IRIS-T are unmatched and the missile literally needs no maintenance. IRIS-T is a state-of-the-art fire-and-forget short-range air-to-air missile with unrivaled close-in combat and intercepts performance. Selective adaptations in aerodynamics and rocket motor allow an extraordinary range of 40 km and an altitude coverage of 20 km.
All the components of the IRIS-T SL including the launcher, radar and command post vehicle can be mounted on MAN SX44 6x6 or MAN SX45 8x8 truck chassis. The Swedish version of the IRIS-T is based on a special version of the Bv 410, the Swedish name of the BvS10, a tracked articulated amphibious all-terrain armored vehicle produced by BAE Systems Land Systems Hägglunds of Sweden
Command and Control Vehicles
An IRIS-T SL air defense battery includes a multifunction radar offering 360° protection with a range of 250 km. The radar vehicle integrates Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) which is a computer-controlled array antenna in which the beam of radio waves can be electronically steered to point in different directions without moving the antenna. The battery also includes three truck-mounted launchers, carrying eight missiles each, and a separate command vehicle that can be positioned up to 20 km away. the command and control vehicle is used to conduct airspace surveillance. It has the capability to evaluate aerial treats and weapon assignments. It is also used to perform fire control and mission planning. It has multi-datalink capability in real-time or non-real-time mode.
