Following Saudi Arabia's announcement, Syria's foreign minister said on Saturday Damascus would resist any ground incursion into its territory. Sunni heavyweight Saudi Arabia and most other Gulf states are opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of UAE, Anwar Gargash made the comments in the federal capital of Abu Dhabi, days after Saudi Arabia said it is ready to deploy ground forces if leaders of the U.S.-led international coalition fighting the group call for it.

An international campaign against the Islamic State group (IS) in Syria should include a US-led ground intervention, the United Arab Emirates' state minister for foreign affairs, said Anwar Gargash.

Kuwait also backs international efforts against hardline Islamist groups in Iraq and Syria although the Gulf state’s constitution prevents it from fighting in anything but defensive wars, a senior Kuwaiti official said.

Kuwait is part of a 34-nation alliance announced by Riyadh in December aimed at countering Daesh and Al Qaida in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan.
Several Gulf Arab states also provide varying kinds of support to a US-led coalition that has been fighting Daesh in Syria since 2014.

Russian and Syrian government forces have intensified an assault on rebel-held areas around the Syrian city of Aleppo. The Syrian government says its forces will soon take full control of the militant-held areas of Aleppo but predicted a tough battle for the largest city in the Arab country.
