Gen. Vladimir Zarudnitsky, commander, Central Military District, told journalists on Monday, February 1st 2016. The 9K720 Iskander is a mobile short-range ballistic missile system

"By late 2016, the missile large unit stationed in the Sverdlovsk Region will have taken delivery of Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles as part of the scheduled replacement of its Tochka-U [systems]," Zarudnitsky responded to a question by a TASS journalist.

According to the district commander, a similar conversion took place in the Samara region in 2015. "The 92nd Brigade in the Samara Region switched over to the Iskander-M system in 2015. Its personnel converted to the type and took part in Exercise Center 2015 (Tsentr 2015), having conducted a successful launch of a cruise missile at a distance of over 400 km," he added.

The 9K720 Iskander tactical missile system is designed to eliminate both point and area targets in the rear area of the enemy. The system comprises vehicles of several types, including a self-propelled launcher on an MZKT chassis, a transporter-loader, a command vehicle, etc. The Iskander carries the 9M723 single-stage solid-propellant missile with a range of 500 km. The missile can be fitted with either a unitary or a cluster-type warhead.
