Belgian Special Forces Group in Senegal for Flintlock 2016 international military training exercise
Flintlock 2016, hosted by Senegal, brings together more than 1,700 Soldiers from 33 countries coming from Africa, North America and Europe, including the Belgian SF Gp (Special Forces Group). Since early February 2016, Senegalese and Mauritanian military units have hosted Special Operations Forces from more than 19 European and North American countries to train alongside soldiers from 14 African nations.

The Belgian Special Forces Group is the special forces unit in the Land Component of the Belgian Armed Forces.

Training will focus on increasing military cooperation across the region and will take place at multiple locations, including at the Senegalese military training base in Thies. Additional training locations will include Podor, Bakel, Saint Louis and sites in Mauritania.

This year’s Flintlock event is projected to be the largest-ever for the cooperative military training event and will mark the second time that Mauritania has hosted in recent years. Mauritania hosted the Flintlock exercise in 2013.

Exercise Flintlock is an annual regional exercise among African, Western, and U.S. counterterrorism forces, which has taken place since 2006. It is a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff-directed, U.S. Africa Command-sponsored, Joint-Special Operations Task Force-Trans Sahara -conducted Special Operations Forces exercise.

Occurring in nations across the Sahel region of Africa, the exercises are planned by Special Operations Command-Africa to develop the capacity and collaboration among African security forces to protect civilian populations.
