At
Eurosatory 2014, the French Defense Company Nexter Systems will showcase
many of its combat proven military vehicles range as the VBCI
8x8 armoured infantry fighting vehicle and the CAESAR
155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer. VBCI and CAESAR howitzer
was used for the first time in combat during the deployment of the French
Army in Afghanistan. Recently, the vehicles were also deployed by the
French Army for the military operation "Serval" in Mali. |

| During the French Army military operation "Serval" in Mali, a total of four CAESAR 155mm self-propelled howitzer were deployed in the country. Thanks to its high mobility, the CAESAR was able to travel long distance in the desert and provides quick fire support for the ground forces. Its five-man (or four-man) crew can make the CAESAR® system ready for action in less than one minute. The Nexter 155 mm/52 caliber gun is mounted on a Renault Trucks Defense SHERPA 6x6 truck chassis version. Its autonomy of more than 600 kilometers and its road speed of more than 80 km/h make it agile and reactive. During a press conference organized by the French army for the press tour of the French defense industry in April 2014, the French artillerymen has said that Caesar is now the key 155mm artillery system in the French army thanks to its mobility and high accuracy. Four years ago France sent eight of its CAESAR howitzers to Afghanistan. The roads in Afghanistan are pretty bad and wheeled combat vehicles have a hard time of it. But Caesar was built to handle cross country operations. The CAESAR in Afghanistan has also showed that the use of 155 mm/52 calibre gun increases the accuracy and reduces the dispersion effect compared to 39 caliber. The CAESAR howitzer is fitted with a 155mm/52 caliber gun (Joint Ballistic MoU) and it can fire any 155 mm NATO standard ammunition (39 or 52 caliber) and particularly Nexter LU211 shell. It can also fire ERFB (Extended Range, Full Bore) shells, BONUS type shells (BONUS is a 155mm artillery shell designed for in-depth engagement of enemy main battle tanks), or VLAP (Very Long-range Artillery Projectile) ammunition extending its range up to 55 km. The CAESAR is equipped with an inertial navigation unit and a ballistic computer and can be connected to any C4I systems. The system can also fire in fully autonomous condition. For the French Army, it is fully integrated into the "ATLAS" Artillery Firing Control System (AFCS). The CAESAR can fire with a rate of 6 rounds per minute, at a range of 42 km range, and its excellent accuracy put it in the lead for in-depth firing. |

The
VBCI is the latest generation of 8x8 armoured infantry
fighting vehicle designed and manufactured by the French Company Nexter
Systems and Renault Trucks Defense. The VBCI is now the backbone of the
French army mechanized units and it has replaced the AMX-10P tracked armoured
vehicle which is in service with the French army since 1973. Its main role is to transport infantrymen to the combat area providing a high level of protection and combat support and also support Leclerc type battle tanks, in demanding environments such as urban and desert areas. According French soldiers, during the deployment of the VBCI in Afghanistan and Mali, the armour design of the vehicle has proven effectiveness against firing of small arms but also against RPG (rocket-propelled grenade). In Afghanistan more than 15 rockets was fired against the VBCI without major damage to the vehicle and no injuries to the crew. The VBCI has also demonstrated its value in peace operations. The French Army sent VBCIs to Lebanon in support of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. The vehicle has been successful in a variety of tasks including surveillance, security and routine patrols. Two versions of the vehicle are currently available: infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) armed with a 25mm gun turret and command post vehicle armed with 12.7mm remotely operated weapon station. During the military operation in Mali and Afghanistan, the Nexter Dragar turret armed with the 25mm automatic has showed an high accuracy providing high performance fire support against dismounted troops and light armoured vehicles. The VBCI is also highly scalable through its modular armor and has a high growth potential that will allow it to be continuously scaled to the threat. The vehicle can be also fitted with add-on armor kits to increase protection against IEDs and RPGs, the main threats in the modern battlefield. |
