Financing shared between the French defence procurement agency (DGA) and RTD on the basis of a contract signed in June 2010.

The vehicle has clocked up several thousand kilometres over all types of terrain in France (roads, sludge in Fontevraud, sand in Biscarosse) and a gunshot test hull has successfully completed ballistic resistance tests. The future VBMR will retain the BMX01's general architecture. Its configuration will be adapted to the versions finally selected by the French Army which will specifically include a VTT Felin version. The RTD VAB was available in 43 versions. Its successor, the VBMR, will also be produced in a number of different versions.

As part of the EBMR program for which the VBMR is the component primarily intended for the infantry, engineers and artillery (artillery observation vehicle), RTD is to provide all the mobility solutions based on its accumulated experience with the BMX01 demonstrator as well as with all other multi-axle armoured vehicles the development of which the Group participated in (VBCI, VAB, Sherpa Medium range and Higuard). These mobility solutions make extensive use of dual technologies derived from mass produced trucks which decreases development and support costs, and which are associated with RTD specific technologies for obtaining high tactical mobility performance.
