General Dynamics Mission Systems-UK (GDMS-UK) displayed its Hawk concept demonstrator proposed for the British army’s hotspot requirement. As Dale Stolzenberg, GDLS-UK External Affairs Manager, explained to Army Recognition, the Hawk is based on the British Army’s Foxhound armored troop carrier.

Hippo’s ASTV (All-Terrain Support Vehicle) enables dismounted forces to “fight light” while still having the necessary equipment to deliver tactical overmatch, as the manufacturer claims. It has been designed to relieve the burden of the dismounted soldier.

Since 2017, Polaris Industries Inc., Applied Research Associates Inc. (ARA) and Neya Systems LLC are teaming to provide the U.S. Army with an elite platform for the Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport (SMET) program: the Team Polaris MRZR X, that will evolve squad mobility with advanced unmanned systems technology from ARA and the pioneering and unsurpassed autonomous systems behavior of Neya Systems.

British manufacturer Supacat has unveiled its LRV (Light Reconnaissance Vehicle) which it dedicates to special forces, border patrol, reconnaissance or strike forces. The Ajax programme includes six variants: Ajax (reconnaissance), Ares (troop carrier), Apollo (recovery), Athena (information management), Atlas (engineer) and Argus (engineering information). The role indicated between brackets is a simplification. Each Ajax variant is a highly-agile, tracked, medium-weight armored fighting vehicle, providing British troops with state-of-the-art, best-in-class protection. The Ajax vehicles are developed upon a highly-adaptable and capable Common Base Platform, maximising commonality in mobility, electronic architecture and survivability that ensures the British Army has a family of world-class platforms.

The Challenger 2 Life Extension Project (LEP) is a British MoD contract to remove obsolescence from Challenger 2 and extend its out-of-service date by ten years to 2035. As well as removing obsolescence, there will be the opportunity to make further capability enhancements. The upgraded tank will be referred to as Challenger 2 Mark 2. The prototype has been displayed at DVD 2018, painted in black to justify its nickname: “Black Knight”.

Lockheed Martin UK has delivered the first production turrets for the Army’s new Ajax vehicles to prime contractor General Dynamics Land Systems. The company is under contract to manufacture, test and certify 245 turrets for the reconnaissance variant of the Ajax fleet. With the first eight turrets now successfully delivered, the production rate at the company’s facility in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, will steadily increase, with full rate production being achieved during 2019.

Alcon Components Ltd, a global specialist for brakes and clutches, has been selected to be the principal supplier of braking components for Patria’s heavy armoured vehicle range. Patria is one of the global market leaders in the production of modern armoured wheeled 8x8 vehicles, supplying seven different customer nations. In addition to the established Patria AMV 8x8 product range, Patria have developed the AMVXP and the Patria 6x6, launched on 11 June at Eurosatory 2018. Alcon braking systems are to be incorporated into both the AMVXP and the Patria 6x6 products, whose unrivalled performance and mobility are setting new standards for all future armoured wheeled vehicles.

Jankel, a world-leader in the design and manufacture of high-specification defence, security and NGO protection systems, has announced their achievement of Direct Partnership certification from Mercedes-Benz. The certified Direct Partnership approval comes at the end of an extensive and exhaustive Due Diligence process, where Mercedes-Benz has fully assessed Jankel’s capability to market, sell and support modified Mercedes Benz commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) chassis systems; a significant achievement for Jankel.

Arnold Defense, a St.Louis-based international manufacturer and supplier of 2.75-inch rocket launchers, is announcing the commencement of initial low-rate production of their “Fletcher” land-based, 2.75-inch/70mm Weapon System. This announcement coincides with the Defence Vehicle Dynamics event (DVD) taking place in UK 19/20 September 2018 but this system is not displayed at this exhibition. The Fletcher system can be mounted on military vehicles as well as base defense platforms.

At DVD 2018, MBDA unveils the Spectre. MBDA’s SPECTRE is an air system optimised for delivering effects in demanding operating environments. Designed to be a low cost, on call organic capability for ground forces, it provides rapid close air support at sub-unit level in military organisations. It is intended to navigate, find, fix and track targets with an operator over the loop (OOTL), firing authority always remaining with the human operator.
