Rheinmetall from Germany introduces new Gladius 2.0 soldier system DSEI 2017


German Company Rheinmetall is emphasizing the Group’s status as a leading supplier of soldier systems at DSEI 2017. Rheinmetall’s new Gladius 2.0 soldier system is debuting in London. Also on show are Argus, which the Canadian Forces are procuring under the name Integrated Soldier System (ISS) and IdZ-ES, which is in service with the German Bundeswehr.

Connecting soldiers, vehicles, sensors, weapons and other subsystems, Gladius 2.0 is the next-generation soldier system. It elevates the infantry to an unprecedented level. Radio-agnostic near real-time voice and data exchange, integration of subsystems such as head-borne systems or drones (e.g. UAV, UGV) as well as the use of sophisticated augmented-reality systems during day and night-time operations lead to information superiority on the battlefield. Open architecture allows easy integration of in-service equipment, scalability and future upgrades.

One of the world’s foremost developers and suppliers of soldier systems, Rheinmetall can point to abundant experience in this field. Another prominent example is Infanterist der Zukunft – Erweitertes System (IdZ-ES), or “Infantryman of the Future – Extended System”, which is in service with the German Army and has a proven export record.

Easy to learn and easy to use, the Argus soldier system features a highly intuitive dismounted C2 application, coupled with navigation and orientation functions as well as secure and simultaneous voice and data communications. In July 2015 the Canadian government contracted with Rheinmetall to start the qualification phase of Argus as the Canadian Army’s Integrated Soldier System (ISS).

Experience gained and lessons learned in recent conflicts are a further reminder of the importance of having well-trained, well-equipped, highly flexible, highly mobile infantry forces that are capable of operating in joint and combined scenarios and putting boots on the ground where they are needed most, ultimately achieving the desired military outcome.
