The 40 CTAS has been conceived as the next generation weapon of choice for medium calibre systems within Armoured Fighting Vehicles and Infantry Fighting Vehicles. The novel rotating breach technology and the associated cased telescope ammunition of the 40 CTAS is such that it is easily integrated within both manned and unmanned turrets with the benefit of minimum intrusion within the turret.

To achieve the compact dimensions CTAI's engineers have designed a rotating breech and ammunition introductor system. Furthermore, a family of very compact cased telescoped ammunition has been developed, with the projectile telescoped into the cartridge.

CTAI's cannon has been selected for the British Army's Warrior upgrade and new Scout vehicle, and is almost certain to arm the French army's new EBRC vehicle. Interest is high from many other armies, including in the US. As well as arming vehicles, the 40 CTAS has been studied as a weapon for aerial gunship applications, as well as for vehicle-mounted anti- aircraft duties.
