The Defence Minister AK Antony will inaugurate the 6th Def Expo-2010 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on Monday, February 15th. This was announced by Secretary Defence Production RK Singh at a Press Conference in New Delhi, today.

Indian Defence Minister AK Antony

He said the four-day event will be the largest ever Defence Exposition in Asia and will showcase India’s emergence as an attractive destination for investment in the Defence Sector and act as a platform for alliances and joint ventures in Defence industry.

Singh said 650 companies from over 35 countries would display weapon systems for Army and Navy. Major participants are from USA, UK, Russia, Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Korea, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Israel Italy, Malaysia and South Africa.

Organised by the Department of Defence Production, the exhibition will continue till February 18th. Dedicated to global land and naval systems business activity – from suppliers to manufacturers, technology providers to services – the Def Expo also offers an opportunity to the international defence industry to promote and showcase their products and services.

The Defence Production Secretary said the Def Expo would project the emergence of India as an attractive market as well as an investment destination for joint ventures in defence industry. The exhibition has generated attention globally and has carved a niche amongst major defence exhibitions around the world, he added.

The Def Expo was conceptualised in 1998 with an objective to promote defence exports from India and exhibit the capabilities of Indian defence R&D and production.

The first exhibition was held in 1999 and subsequently in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. While a modest 197 exhibitors participated in the first Def Expo, the biennial event will feature 650 exhibitors in its 6th edition this year.

Israel is the biggest participating country in terms of space occupied (1248 sq meters) while the United States is represented with the maximum number of 25 companies. In the year 2008 there were 447 exhibitors from 29 countries.

The exhibition area has almost doubled from 17200 sq meter in 2008 to 30100 sq meter this year. Defence Ministers from UK, Bulgaria, Hungary, Nigeria, Turkey, Uganda, Senegal and Suriname along with Official delegations from 41 countries would attend the deliberations. Naval Chiefs from Kazakhstan, Mozambique, Brunei, Qatar and Senegal and Army Chief from Mongolia will also attend the exhibition.

Pakistan and China not invited to DefExpo 2010

Tuesday , 16 February 2010, 09:17

India has not invited its neighbours Pakistan and China at DefExpo 2010

India has not invited its neighbours Pakistan and China for the sixth edition of the biennial defence exhibition being organised here from February 15 to 18.

"We have not sent invitations to Pakistan and China for the Defexpo 2010. In fact, they also do not invite us for such events they organise. Last year, we had invited China to the AeroIndia-2009 show in Bangalore, but it did not participate," Defence Production Secretary R K Singh said.

Defexpo 2010, which will witness participation from 35 countries and will have official delegations from 41 countries, would be the largest ever held in the last decade and Defence Minister A K Antony will inaugurate it. Among the foreign countries to attend the exhibition, US would have the largest representation, followed by Israel. Among the countries to attend the exhibition, Bulgaria, Hungary, Nigeria, Senegal, Surinam, Turkey, Uganda and United Kingdom would send their Defence Ministers, while several others, including Israel and Italy, would be represented by their deputy ministers.

There would be delegations headed by some countries' Defence Secretaries, Chiefs of Army and Navy too.

Rosoboronexport at DefExpo 2010 - Large presence of Russian Industry

Tuesday , 16 February 2010, 11:15

Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport at Defexpo India Defense Exhibition 2010

The Rosoboronexport’s exposition showcases a wide nomenclature of defence export products intended for land forces employment taking due account of potential customers’ requirements.

The BTR-80 and BTR-80A armoured personnel carriers are designed to transport troops and provide fire support to motorised infantry units. The vehicles can be employed both by land and marine forces.

It makes no doubts that specialists and guests to the exhibition will be attracted to the upgraded BMP-3M highly manoeuvrable infantry combat vehicle. It is armed with the 100-mm smoothbore gun/missile launcher, 30-mm automatic cannon and 7.62-mm machine gun integrated in a single weapons module.

Visitors also will be able to familiarise themselves with the T-90S missile/gun main battle tank which features small dimensions, reduced weight and low observable profile, as well as advanced gun/missile launcher armament, active and reactive armour protection. The T-90S is considered to be one of the world’s best tanks to date.

Land forces’ artillery systems will be traditionally represented by promotional materials on multiple rocket launch systems, upgraded self-propelled guns and howitzers, antitank guided weapons, reconnaissance and combat control systems.

The Rosoboronexport’s exposition secures a prominent space for multiple rocket launch systems and a wide range of projectiles for them. These systems are in great demand in many regions over the world as a powerful and highly effective means capable of suppressing enemy forces and assets at a range of 20 to 90 km. The exposition features the 9A52-4 Smerch multiple rocket launch system mounted on the Kamaz truck with the removable or fixed containers. Its combat vehicle is equipped with the automated fire control and guidance system (ASUNO), as well as air conditioning system.

The exposition contains promotional materials on self-propelled and towed artillery systems, including the 152-mm Msta-S self-propelled howitzer coupled with the automated fire control and guidance system, 120-mm Nona-M1 mortar, and others.

Military specialists will have the opportunity to see a plethora of general-purpose and close-combat infantry weapons, such as well-known types of grenade launchers (hand-held RPG-7V1 and RPG-27, automatic AGS-30), machine guns (Pecheneg, PKM, RPK, and others), PDM-A Shmel-M new-generation flame throwers, SVD and SVDS sniper rifles, and, of course, Kalashnikov assault rifles of the so called hundredth series, namely AK-101, AK-102, AK-103, AK-104.

Air defence experts will be attracted to the upgraded Pechora-2M air defence missile system (ADMS). The upgrade has its technical and tactical characteristics notably improved, and enjoys some entirely new capabilities. The system’s engagement envelope has been substantially extended (up to 32 km - in range) and target kill effectiveness increased by replacing vintage components and signal processors with new up-to-date analogues and improving ballistic flight characteristics of the surface-to-air guided missile. The “Pechora-2M” ADMS upgrading programme aims at extending the system’s service life up to 15 years at least.

In the family of famous air defence weapon systems having high export capacities one will find the Buk-M2E multi-channel medium-range and Tor-M2E short-range air defence missile systems. The two weapon systems are designed to defend vital administrative, military and industrial installations against enemy air attacks, including those with precision-guided munitions, in most demanding operational environment.

“During Defexpo India 2010 we are going to meet and have discussions with our traditional foreign partners in military technical cooperation, as well as with new potential customers willing to buy Russian-made weapons and military equipment”, noted Victor Komardin. - We are confident that this display of weapons and military equipment for Land Forces and Navy will open up a new phase of Russia’s mutually advantageous cooperation with India and other states in the region.”

BAE Systems at DefExpo - a towering display of artillery power

Saturday , 13 February 2010, 10:03

Two of the world's most powerful howitzers will dominate the BAE Systems' presence at DefExpo 2010 in Delhi.

Two of the world's most powerful howitzers will dominate the BAE Systems' presence at DefExpo in Delhi starting Feb 15th. The BAE Systems FH77 B05 towed howitzer, and M777, the ultra light howitzer, will both be part of BAE Systems' biggest ever presence at DefExpo.

BAE Systems will be co-located with Defence Land Systems India, the Mahindra and BAE Systems joint venture company which will soon be up and running.

Andrew Gallagher, President BAE Systems India said:"BAE Systems' commitment to the development of a long term domestic business in India, with a full range of skills and capabilities, is unmatched. We firmly support the Indian Government's aim of procuring 70% of defence equipment domestically and see the establishment of Defence Land Systems India as a major contribution towards this objective."

M777, the world's lightest 155mm howitzer, will grace the BAE Systems stand. Next to the M777, on the Defence Land Systems India stand, will be the FH77 B05. This is the significantly upgraded and more powerful big brother of the FH77 B02 in service with the Indian Army, which performed so admirably during the Kargil conflict.

The BAE Systems FH77 B05 is bidding for the Indian Army requirement for towed 52cal 155mm howitzers. Trials with the India Army are due to start after DefExpo. The new upgraded howitzer, FH77 B05, has all round greater performance including increased range over the 39cal FH77 B02. It is intended that Defence Land Systems India would have a significant and increasing role in the production of FH77 B05, toward the intended goal of Defence Land Systems India becoming an artillery centre of excellence in India.

The M777 ultra light weight howitzer is now in the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process for a possible FMS purchase between the US and Indian Governments. M777 is, by some considerable margin, the lightest 155mm howitzer in the world, and the only one proven in battle. BAE Systems stands ready to support both governments in a possible FMS purchase.

DefExpo will also see the launch of the MPVI (Mine Protected Vehicle India). A mine protected vehicle specifically designed for Indian conditions - the vehicle will make its first public appearance at the show on Defence Land Systems India's stand. The result of collaboration between Mahindra and BAE Systems, MPVI brings battle proven life saving vehicle protection technology to India in an affordable package, based on an indigenously assembled chassis and drive train. MPVI will be built at Defence Land Systems India's Faridabad manufacturing facility.

The UK's new tactical communications system, Falcon, will also be on display. Falcon will enter service with the British Army and Royal Air Force this year and is the world's first tactical comms system based on an all IP (Internet Protocol) open architecture. FALCON provides secure deployable broadband voice, data and video, delivering the core of Network Enabled Capability. FALCON interoperates with all NATO systems, enabling better information sharing and exploitation, improving military commanders' awareness and decision-making, and ultimately mission success. BAE Systems intends to use elements of what has been produced for Falcon in the bid for the Indian Army's Tactical Communications System programme.

Anjani and BAE Systems recently announced a new partnership that will see the two companies collaborate to produce survivability and protection equipment for soldiers and vehicles in India. Anjani and BAE Systems will be displaying these capabilities on their stands. Anjani is bidding for the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) requirement for 59,000 bullet proof vests. If successful the vests will be produced by Anjani in India using BAE Systems' Tensylon technology. The Tensylon ballistic material, made from high performance polyethylene fibre, provides superior performance and a lighter-weight, cost-effective solution.

DefExpo also sees the India launch of BAE Systems' on-board power management system, which more than doubles the electrical power output of military vehicles to increase mission effectiveness. The system also provides power that can be exported from the vehicle during natural disasters and to support facilities and equipment such as field hospitals, command centres, and water purification systems.
