Russia on September 14 said it has delivered its most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system S-400 to India on time despite pressure from Washington and the US-led West’s sanctions. Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov made the remarks ahead of a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Uzbekistan this week.

The contract to deliver five battalion sets of S-400 worth 5.43 billion dollars was signed in October 2018. S-400 is a Russian long- and medium-range air defense missile system. It is designed to hit air-launched weapons and reconnaissance means, including stealth aircraft, as well as other aerial targets amid intensive fire and electronic countermeasures. It has a range of 400 km and can destroy targets at an altitude of 30 km. The S-400 entered service in the Russian armed forces in 2007.

Russia had started delivery of the first regiment of S-400 in December 2021. The missile system has already been deployed in such a way that it can cover parts of the border with China in the northern sector as well as the frontier with Pakistan.
