Luxembourg sends to Ukraine HUMVEE 4x4 tactical vehicles as part of a military aid


According to a Tweet published by François Bausch Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg on November 21, 2022, Luxembourg has sent High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) to Ukraine that come from its military inventory.

Luxembourg has already provided Ukraine with weapons and military equipment including 100 NLAW anti-tank missile weapons, light tactical vehicles, and 15 military tents.

Citing information published on the Internet, the Luxembourg Army has a total of 42 HUMVEE (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles) in 8 different variants. The vehicle is used as a personnel carrier vehicle, weapon system cargo carrier, ambulance, and truck cargo.

The HUMVEE M1114 is the most used variant within the army of Luxembourg. The armor protection includes of welded aluminum, composite, and steel. In the U.S. armed forces, the vehicle is equipped with an up-Armored HMMWV (UAH) kit, FRAG (Fragmentary Armor Kits) kits 1, 1a, 2, and 5, as well as a GPK(Gunner Protection Kit) or MCTAGS (Marine Corps Transparent Armor Gun Shield ) for the gunner’s protection. It can carry four military personnel.

The armor mounted on the M1114 provides protection against the firing of small arms 7.62 mm armor-piercing rounds and artillery shell splinters. It withstands mine blasts equivalent to 5.4 kg of TNT at the front and equivalent to 1.8 kg of TNT at the rear.

The M1114 is based on the improved chassis of the original HUMVEE with a stronger suspension. It is also fitted with a larger and more powerful engine. The vehicle is powered by a Detroit Diesel 6.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine developing 190 hp coupled to a 4-speed automatic transmission. It can reach a maximum road speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 450 km.

The roof of the M1114 is fitted with a one-man open-top turret which is fitted with armor plates on 360°. The turret can be armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun or one 40mm automatic grenade launcher.
