Rheinmetall has successfully tested the technology demonstrator version of a laser weapon built on behalf of the Bundeswehr (German army). EU foreign ministers have agreed to allocate an additional €500 million from the European Peace Facility for arms supplies to Ukraine. This will bring the total amount of the EU military support to Ukraine to €2 billion. At the same time, however, ministers failed to agree on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia and an oil ban, EU High Representative Josep Borrell reported last night.

According to what Soňa Fialová published in ekonomickydenik-cz on May 16, a proposal to acquire German Leopard tanks may be coming to the Czech government this week in the framework of a donation procedure of its own T-72 tanks to Ukraine. The Minister of Defense Jana Černochová and her team managed to negotiate a variant in which the Czech Republic will receive from Germany a donation of 20 Leopard 2 A4 tanks and will buy 40 Leopard 2A7 tanks.

The Slovenian government, represented by the European procurement organization OCCAR, and ARTEC, a consortium of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall, have signed a contract for the delivery of 45 Boxer armored vehicles in four different variants. The volume of the order amounts to EUR 281.5 million. Delivery of the Boxer vehicles is scheduled to begin in 2024 and be completed in 2026. Now that EU and NATO member Slovenia has joined the Boxer program, it has six user states.

Elbit Systems announced on May 16 that its U.S. subsidiary, Elbit Systems of America LLC, was awarded a delivery order valued at $49 million for the supply of Squad Binocular Night Vision Goggle (SBNVG) systems to the U.S. Marines Corps. The order will be executed in Roanoke, Virginia and will be supplied through September 2023. This additional order is part of a $249 million five-year Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract from September 6, 2019.

According to information published on May 16, 2022, the U.S. Army recently awarded the Javelin Joint Venture two production contracts for Javelin anti-tank missiles and associated equipment and services with a total value of $309 million. These contracts include more than 1,300 Javelin missiles funded from the recent Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act and orders for several international customers including Norway, Albania, Latvia, and Thailand.

On May 13, 2022, Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby announced the deployment of U.S. troops to Europe to replace forces ordered there earlier this year. Kirby said Secretary of Defense Lloyd J.
