Description
The M901 truck is the launching station (launcher unit) for MIM-104 patriot surface-to-air defense missile system. It is used to transport, aim and launch the missile. The M901 launching station is equipped with 4 Patriot or Patriot PAC-2 sealed canisters. Each M901 has its own on-board power and can be deployed up to 1,000 meters away from the MSQ-104. Communications between the MSQ-104 and the M901 can be done by fiber optic data link or VHF signal. The US Army is now looking at a launcher system that can fire THAAD and Patriot missiles. The launcher is known as the Common Launcher and is the subject of a development contract awarded to Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Company.

Missile support
The M901 is a remotely operated traversable four-round launcher station, mounted on the rear of an M860 two-axle semi-trailer with its own 15 kW generator, datalink terminal and electronics pack. The 15kW generator is mounted at the front of the semi-trailer M860. Two outriggers are mounted on each sides of the semi-trailer M860, they are used when the system is in firing position.
Missile
The Patriot missile is equipped with a track-via-missile (TVM) guidance system. Midcourse correction commands are transmitted to the guidance system from the mobile engagement control centre. The MIM-104A Patriot missile is a certified round which is shipped, stored and fired from its Lockheed Martin rectangular box-like container-launcher. Each container-launcher box is 6.1 m long, 1.09 m wide and 0.99 m high. Weight empty is 794 kg and loaded 1,696 kg. The missile requires no testing or maintenance in the field, periodic lot sampling of missiles on launchers and in storage provides assurance of the weapon's capability.
Truck
The launching station with its semi-trailer M860 is towed by an M983 10-ton tractor and can be emplaced on a 10-degree slope. The M983 truck uses an 8x8 chassis and is powered by a Detroit Diesel, MUI, 8V-92TA, V-8 2-stroke litre diesel developing 445 hp at 2,100 rpm. The M860 semi-trailer is tracted by the M983 HEMTT truck, the missiles containers are mounted on the back side of the trailer. The M860 trailer is a two-axle trailerwith turntable steering on which the turntable steering has an automatic locking feature to aid in reversing operations.
Combat use
The M901 Launching Stations are remotely-operated, self-contained units. The ECS controls operation of the launchers through each launcher's DLT, via fiber optic or VHF (SINCGARS) data link. Integral leveling equipment permits emplacement on slopes of up to 10 degrees. Each launcher is trainable in azimuth and elevates to a fixed, elevated launch position. Precise aiming of the launcher before launch is not necessary; thus, no extra lags are introduced into system reaction time. Each launcher is also capable of providing detailed diagnostics to the ECS via the data link. The launching station contains four major equipment subsystems: the launcher generator set, the launcher electronics module (LEM), the launcher mechanics assembly (LMA), and the launcher interconnection group (LIG). The generator set consists of a 15 kW, 400 Hz generator that powers the launcher. The LEM is used for the real-time implementation of launcher operations requested via data link from the ECS. The LMA physically erects and rotates the launcher's platform and its missiles. The LIG connects the missiles themselves to the launcher via the Launcher Missile Round Distributor (LMRD).
