According to a Russian press agency, Russia will start the delivery of S-400 surface-to-air defense missile systems to India at the end of this year. The S-400 Triumph, NATO code-named SA-21 Growler, was developed by The Russian company Almaz Central Design Bureau.

New Delhi announced its intention to purchase Russian-made S-400 air defense missile systems back in 2015. A $5.43 billion contract on the delivery of five regiments of S-400 Triumf air defense systems was signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in October 2018.
A battery o S-400 includes a fire control and target tracking radar 92N6E, acquisition and battle management radar 91N6E Big Bird, launcher units with four missile containers 5P85TE2 and 5P985SE2, and command and control center 55K6E. All the components of the S-400 battery are based on military truck chassis.
The S-400 is able to destroy aerial targets, including aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and ballistic and cruise missiles at a maximum range of 400 km and altitude up to 30 km. This air defense missile system can simultaneously engage 36 targets.
The S-400 can fire the 9M96E and 9M96E2 surface-to-air missiles and can also launch the 48N6E missile of the S-300 PMU-1 system and the 48N6E2 missiles of the S-300 PMU-2 Favorit system. The S-400 can also fire the 9M96E and 9M96E2, advanced Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) designed to engage a wide range of aerodynamic and ballistic targets in the most severe clutter and jamming environments with unprecedented effectiveness. These missiles are able to intercept targets at a maximum speed of Mach 15 (4,800-5000 m/s) and at a maximum altitude of 35,000 meters.
