The Akeron MP missile is the result of investments in upstream research and technology studies made by the DGA with MBDA to renew the surface-to-surface missile capability. Equipped with an imaging infrared seeker, the Akeron MP is specially designed to be used by infantry units as an anti-tank weapon or to be integrated into wheeled or tracked combat vehicles, offering more firepower against modern tanks or heavy armored vehicles.

Produced as part of an armament program notified in 2013 by the DGA to MBDA, the Akeron MP has been inducted in with the Ground Force and the special forces of the three forces since 2017. The only latest-generation anti-tank missile, it has been used in operations since 2018.

According to the current Military Programming Law (Loi de Programmation Militaire 2019-2025), the delivery of 1,950 missiles is planned by 2025.
