Currently, the two countries are engaged in the Russo-Ukrainian War which started in 2014 following the Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Relations between the two countries have been hostile since the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, which toppled Ukraine's elected President Viktor Yanukovych and his supporters because he refused to sign a political association and free trade agreement with the European Union that enjoyed majority support in Ukraine's parliament.

From the very beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2014, NATO has adopted a firm position in full support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. The Allies strongly condemn and will not recognize Russia’s illegal and illegitimate annexation of Crimea, and denounce its temporary occupation.

In 2015, Canada launched Operation UNIFIER, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) military training and capacity-building mission in Ukraine. Operation UNIFIER is the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) mission to support the Security Forces of Ukraine.

Currently, Canada deploys approximately 200 military personnel to Ukraine under Operation UNIFIER, which has been extended until March 31, 2022. The Canadian Armed Forces have trained more than 12,500 members of Ukraine’s Security Forces since the mission began.

According to the Global News, Canadian Special Forces will provide training to the Ukrainian armed forces and is part of the broader Canadian Armed Forces’ efforts to support Ukraine’s Security Forces.
