Greece agrees procurement of 205 KF41 lynx IFVs and 123 upgraded Leopard 2A4 tanks


According to information published by the "DefenceGreece-Media" on February 10, 2023, Greece announced to work on the procurement of 123 upgraded Leopard 2A4 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) as well as 205 German-made KF41 Lynx tracked armored IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicles).

It was preceded by last week's Council of Chiefs of General Staff (SAGE) as well as the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) the armament programs were discussed and analyzed of the Army as well as the conclusion of the intended Greek-German Bilateral Defence Agreement. The programs will be led by the German companies Rheinmetall and KMW in collaboration with the local defense industries of Greece for a total amount of €3.5 billion.

Citing information published by the Greek defense magazine website "DefenceReview.gr" on February 10, 2023, in the framework of a modernization program for the Hellenic armed forces. According to a statement released by the Hellenic Ministry of Defense, the Greek government approved the acquisition of 250 German-made KF41 Lynx tracked armored IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicles) and the modernization of 123 Leopard 2A4 to the Leopard 2A7 configuration.

Both programs will be led by the German companies Rheinmetall and KMW (Krauss-Maffei Wegmann) in collaboration with the local defense industries of Greece for a total amount of €3.5 billion.

At the same time, Germany will deliver immediately 100 Marder 1A3 tracked armored IFVs and another batch of 100 Marder will be supplied in the next few months by Germany according to a plan to replace the Marder 1A3 currently in service with the German army by the new Puma IFVs.

According to military open source information, the Hellenic army has a total of 1,228 tanks including 170 Leopard 2A6HEL, 183 Leopard 2A4, 500 Leopard 1A4/5, and 375 M48A5.

On November 23, 2022, the Army Recognition team reported that the German company Rheinmetall supplied the first Marder 1A3 tracked armored IFVs to Greece. The first units of these Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles were presented as part of the parade of the Hellenic Armed Forces on the occasion of the national holiday on October 28th, 2022, in Thessaloniki.
