On November 4, 2022, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) announced approximately $400 million in additional security assistance for Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). This new military to Ukraine included the supply of 250 refurbished M1117 ASVs (Armored Security Vehicles).

Citing information published on November 18, 2022, by the CSIS (Center for Strategic & International Studies), U.S. aid to Ukraine totals $68 billion, and the White House has asked Congress for another $37.7 billion budget to provide new military aid packages for Ukraine.

The M1117 Guardian also named ASV (Armored Security Vehicle) is an American-made 4x4 armored vehicle based on the V-100 and V-150 Commando series of armored cars. The vehicle is produced by the American company Textron Marine & Land Systems.

The M1117 was built following a request of the U.S. Army to have a new light-wheeled vehicle able to protect soldiers against mine threats. It was adopted in 2001 by the U.S. armed forces and deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The M1117 design consists of three main parts with the crew including the driver and commander at the front, a weapon station in the middle of the top roof and troops, and the engine compartment at the rear. The vehicle is fitted with an advanced modular expandable armor package from German company IBD Deisenroth Engineering, consisting of ceramic composite applique armor on the exterior and spall liner on the interior. This armor package provides protection against the firing of small arms as well as explosion blasts of mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). It can carry eight infantrymen.

The M1117 Guardian AS is fitted with a one-man non-stabilized turret which is armed with one 40mm automatic grenade launcher (MK19 MOD 3) and a .50-caliber machine gun (M2/M48). The turret traverses 360° and allows an elevation of 45°.
