Germany delivers to Ukraine three Beaver AVLB Armored Vehicle Launched Bridges


On December 1, 2022, the German Ministry of Defense updated the list of military equipment and combat vehicles delivered to Ukraine by the German government, Germany has delivered three Beaver (Biber) Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB) tracked armored vehicles to Ukraine as part of new military assistance following the Russian invasion of the country.

At the same time, the German Ministry of Defense announced the delivery of 10 unmanned surface vessels, 65 border protection vehicles, 14,000 sleeping bags, Mi-24 spare parts, and 30 ambulances.

On June 21, the German government published a very detailed list of military equipment sent or committed to Ukraine since January 1, 2022. Prior to the release of this list, the government refused to share this information pointing to security concerns. Today, the German government regularly updates this list to show its great involvement in military aid to Ukraine.

According to a report published on the Kiel Institute for the world economy website, Since 2014, Germany provided more than €1.8 billion in financial support to Ukraine. This support included €750 million in development assistance, €150 million in humanitarian aid, and a loan guarantee facility of €500 million (Federal Foreign Office 2022). Germany is one of the most important European countries contributing to military and financial aid to Ukraine.

The Beaver (Biber) is a German-made Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB) based on the tracked chassis and the armored hull of the Leopard 1 Main Battle Tank (MBT). It is a highly mobile, rapidly deployable assault bridge that can be used to span natural and man-made obstacles on the battlefield. The engineering vehicle is equipped with a 22-meter-long bridge that can be used to cross rivers or trenches by tracked or wheeled vehicles of up to 60 tons.

The Beaver AVLB is powered by a V-10, twin super-charged multi-fuel Diesel engine developing 830 hp. It is equipped with an NBC protection system that provides protection against nuclear, biological, and chemical agents. It is also equipped with eight smoke / HE (High Explosive) grenade dischargers.

In terms of technical features, the Beaver AVLB has a length of 11.82m, a width of 4.0 m, and a height of 3.57 m. The bridge launcher vehicle has a combat weight of 45,450 kg.
